Pile Foundation Part 4
Pile Foundation Part 4
PILE FOUNDATIONS-IV
by
As per IS 2911 Part I (2010), minimum spacing of 2.5D where D is shaft diameter for
point bearing piles and 3D for friction piles. In loose sand or fill deposits, a minimum
spacing of 2D, D being the diameter of the shaft, is suggested.
Typical arrangements of piles in groups
Pile Group Efficiency
• The spacing of piles is usually predetermined by practical and economical
considerations.
• The design of a pile foundation subjected to vertical loads consists of
1. The determination of the ultimate load bearing capacity of the
group Qgu.
2. Determination of the settlement of the group, Sg under an
allowable load Qga .
• The ultimate load of the group is generally different from the sum of the
ultimate loads of individual piles Qu.
• The factor is called group efficiency
Since bored piles do not compact the soil between the piles, the efficiency
factor will never be greater than unity. However, for all practical purposes,
the efficiency may be taken as unity

Settlement of Pile Group in Sands
• Solution.
• The negative frictional load on the group is the maximum of
following two Equations,
• Fng= nFn = 9 x PLc cu = 9 x π (0.3) (3) (30) = 763 kN
• Fng= cu Lc Pg + γ Lc Ag = (30)(3)((2x0.9+ 0.3)x4) + (15)(3)
((2x0.9+ 0.3)2) = 756 + 198.45 = 954.45 kN
• Negative skin friction of pile group is 954.45 kN.
