MATHEMETICS 4:QUARTER 4

WEEK 1

LESSON 1:
Finding the Area of an
Irregular Figure
LESSON 1:
Finding the Area of an Irregular Figure

Objective:
Find the area of an irregular figure made up of
squares and rectangles using sq. cm and sq. m
REVIEW

 How do you find the area of a square? Of a rectangle?

A= s² A= l x w
A= s x s

 How do you express area measures

 Square units
 Square centimeter or cm²
 Square meter or m²
REVIEW
 Find the area of the following squares:

A. A = s²
12 cm =12cm x 12cm
=144 sq. cm or 144 cm²

B. A = s²
9m
=9 m x 9 m
=81 sq. m or 81 m²
REVIEW
 Find the area of the following rectangles:

A=lxw
A. 9 cm
=15 cm x 9 cm
15 cm =135 sq. cm or 135 cm²

B. 10 m A=lxw
=10 m x 4 m
4m
=40 sq. m or 40 m²
MOTIVATION

Observe the following figures.

How can you cut each figure into squares?
Read and analyze the problem
Andrew and his sister Anne
made a vegetable garden as shown
below.Find the area of their garden.

5m
6m
3m
8m
Whose garden is it?
What can you say about the shape of their garden?
How will you find its area. In how many watys can you find its area
Solution #1 3m
5m 2
6m
3m 1
8m
There are two rectangles formed
Area of Rectangle 1: A=l x w A1= 5 m x 3 m
= 15 m² or 15 sq.m
Area of Rectangle 2: A=l x w A2= 6 m x 3 m
= 18 m² or 18 sq.m

Total Area of Figure: 15 sq. m + 18 sq .m = 33 square meter

or 33 m²
3m
Solution #2 3m
5m 1
6m
3m 2
8m
There are two rectangles formed
A1= 3 m x 3 m
Area of Square 1: A=s²
= 9 m² or 9 sq.m
Area of Rectangle 2: A=l x w A2= 8 m x 3 m
= 24 m² or 24 sq.m

Total Area of Figure: 9 sq. m + 24 sq .m = 33 square meter

or 33 m²

GET MOVING
Find the area of the following irregular figures. Show the solution.
36 cm
7 cm 18 cm
2. 3. A1 10 cm

1.
A1 7 cm A1 6 cm 10 cm
32 cm A2 22 cm

9 cm A2
A2 7 cm
6 cm
26 cm

A1= L x w
21 cm =36 cm x 10 cm
A1= s² A1= L x w
=18 cm x 6 cm = 360 cm² or 360 sq cm
= 7 cm x 7 cm
= 49 cm² or 49 sq cm = 108 cm² or 108 sq cm A2= l x w
A2= L x w A2= l x w = 26 cm x 22 cm
=21 cm x 9 cm = 7 cm x 6 cm = 572 cm² or 572 sq cm
= 189 cm² or 189 sq cm = 42 cm² or 42 sq cm Total Area = 360 + 572
Total Area = 49 + 189 Total Area = 108 + 42 = 932 sq cm
= 238 sq cm = 150 sq cm
KEEP MOVING
Find the area of the following irregular figures. Show the solution.

A2
A2 2m
A 1= L x W A1= s²
= 9 cm x 2 cm = 8 cm x 8 cm
= 18 cm² or 18 sq. cm = 64 m² or 64 sq. m
A2= s² A 2= L x W
= 6 cm x 6 cm = 10 m x 2 m
= 36 cm² or 36 sq. cm = 20 m² or 20 sq. cm
Total Area = 18 cm² + 36 cm² Total Area = 64 m² + 20 m²
= 54 cm² = 84 m²
KEEP MOVING
Find the area of the following irregular figures. Show the solution.
Total Area = 72 cm² + 108 cm²
= 108 cm²
6m A1
A1 12 cm
A2
A2
A 1= L x W A 1= L x W
= 6 cm x 12 cm = 15 m x 6 m
= 72 cm² or 72 sq. cm = 90 m² or 90 sq. cm
Total Area = 90 m² + 120 m²
A 2= L x W A 2= L x W = 210 m²
= 18 cm x 6 cm = 20 m x 6 cm
= 108 cm² or 108 sq. cm = 120 m² or 120 sq. cm
REMEMBER

AREA – is the amount of surface occupied by a plane

figure. It is the number of square units it takes to
cover the inside of a closed figure. Square units may
be in cm² or m²
To find the area of a:
square = s x s or s² where s= side
rectangle = l x w where l= length and w=width
REMEMBER
To find the area of an irregular shape that is made up
of squares and rectangles:
1. Divide or cut the figure into squares and
rectangles;
2. Find the area of each square and rectangle made;
3. Add the areas of the squares and/or rectangles
made to find the area of the irregular figure; and
4. Express the area in sq cm (cm²) or sq m (m²)
