Debate skills
 Think critically – make an argument based on logic and evidence

 Do research – give clear examples, use these to make arguments with reliable
evidence

 Use the appropriate language – using words such as “motion” and “rebuttal”
make your argument sound more academic

 Give proper lead ins – Phrases such as “For my first point I would like to say…”
and “the evidence for this is clear… therefore…”

 Look for faults – listen for faults in your opposition’s arguments

Read the texts.

Find and underline examples that can help


your argument.

Highlight any useful phrases that you can use


when you speak for or against the motion.

Take a note of any useful quotes – some of


the articles occasionally reference an expert
or a notable person on the topic

Build arguments around the information you


find.
Debating Motions:
 The judges will vote on the motion

 Two teams. One for the motion and one against the
motion Celebrity culture is harming
 Each team will have 3 members. Each member will young people
make a point for 90 seconds

 Each point should be extended to feature examples and Celebrities should remain silent
analysis on political issues
 After a point the other team can make a rebuttal – a
counter-point

 When both sides are finished there will be time for an


open discussion at the end

 The judges will vote once more on the motion
