ABSTRACT

Concrete is a effectively used for construction work on a large scale, as it has basic
characteristics such as high compressive strength, high flexural strength, tensile strength, durability.
Concrete may get easily hardened as it required a proper water-cement ratio. Concrete is mixture of
cement, fine aggregate, coarse aggregate, water not only these mentioned materials but admixtures
also plays an Important Role of measurement in announced the properties of Concrete. Admixtures
are classified into 2 types are Chemical & Natural admixtures in recent construction many of
Engineers using chemical admixtures in mixing of concrete but these chemical admixtures are
showing reactions and also Impact on the Environment So In this present study the Chemical
admixtures are replaced with Natural admixtures and tested to know the Strength characteristics.
The Natural admixtures used in study are aloe Vera and jaggery Powder. Aloe Vera is a short stem
plant that has almost 98% of water in its leaves.
Each leaf is full of a slimy tissue which possesses water. This slimy water is called as “Gel”. It
is good for making readily mix concrete that is more flowing as compared to conventional
concrete. After adding jaggery powder to the concrete the hydration process is reduced and
therefore the drying time of the concrete is increased. In this present study, an attempt is made
by adding of natural admixture. The concrete specimens of M30 grade are casted by adding of
natural admixture at different mix proportions i.e., 0%, 0.5%, 1%, 1.5%, 2%, 2.5%, and 3%.
After curing, the specimens are tested for compressive strength and split tensile strength. The
obtained results are compared with conventional concrete mix to know the strength
characteristics at the age of 7, 14, and 28 days.

KEYWORDS: Aloe Vera, Jaggery, Super plasticizers, Compressive strength, Split tensile
strength, High flexural strength.
CHAPTER-1
INTRODUCTION
GENERAL
Concrete plays a crucial role in construction. It's a versatile material used in building
foundations, roads, bridges, dams, and many other structures. Its properties, such as strength, durability,
and versatility, make it a popular choice. Additionally, concrete can be molded into various shapes and
sizes, allowing for customization to suit specific project requirements. Concrete admixtures are
additional ingredients added to the concrete mix to modify its properties. These admixtures can enhance
workability, strength, durability, and other characteristics of concrete. There are several types of
admixtures, each serving specific purposes.

ADMIXTURE
Admixture is substances introduced into concrete mixes to alter or improve properties of fresh
and/or hardened concrete. The admixture is generally added in a relatively small quantity ranging from
0.5% to 3% by weight of cement.
Admixture is a material other than water, aggregates, and hydraulic cement that is used as an
ingredient of concrete or mortar, and is added to the batch immediately before or during mixing. The usage
of chemical admixtures in concrete is a common practice in modern construction, and the chemical
admixture can lead to pollution of the environment by production, transport, storage, or handling, uses in
concrete, service life of concrete structure, recycling of concrete from demolition, and disposal of building
waste and residues. In this present study, an attempt is made by adding of natural admixture as an
alternative for chemical admixture like Aloe Vera and jaggery powder.

ALOE VERA
Aloe Vera pulp was made into liquid form by using a Mixer grinder. Aloe Vera liquid and
super plasticizers were added to gauged water. The liquid mixture was then added to the dry mixture
and mixed well till homogeneous consistent porous concrete mix was obtained. Mixture of Aloe Vera
Gel showed good results on the properties of concrete in both workability and compressive strength at
2.5% addition to the water. Workability of concrete up to 57% along with 10% increment in
compressive strength of concrete
JAGGERY POWDER
Jaggery powder increases efficiency, durability, and compression strength as your volume in the
concrete mix increases. After adding jaggery powder to the concrete the hydration process is reduced and
therefore the drying time of the concrete is increased.

NECCESSITY OF WORK

The use of aloe Vera and jaggery powder as admixtures in concrete is not a common or widely
recognized practice in the construction industry. Traditional concrete mixtures typically consist of cement,
water, sand, and aggregate. Aloe Vera and jaggery powder are not known for their properties that enhance
the strength or durability of concrete. While there is ongoing research in the field of concrete technology to
explore new and innovative additives, these specific ingredients are not widely accepted or studied for
concrete applications. It's essential to rely on proven and established admixtures that have undergone
rigorous testing and research to ensure the structural integrity and safety of concrete structures.
OBJECTIVES OF THE WORK

• To study and test the properties of coarse aggregates, fine aggregates and cement.
• To study different strength properties like compressive strength and split tensile strength of M30
grade concrete that is mixed by adding of natural admixtures like aloe Vera and jaggery powder.
The obtained values are compared with the conventional concrete.

SCOPE OF THE WORK

In this present study, an attempt is made by adding of natural admixture like aloe Vera and
jaggery powder. The concrete specimens of M30 grade are casted by adding of natural admixture at
different mix proportions i.e., 0%, 0.5%, 1%, 1.5%, 2%, 2.5%, and 3%. After curing, the specimens
are tested for compressive strength and split tensile strength. The obtained results are compared with
conventional concrete mix to know the strength characteristics at the age of 7, 14, and 28 days.

A. V. Pavan Kumar et al. 2015 Studied about effect of Sugar, Jaggery powder and Sugar Cane Ash on
Properties of Concrete. Workability increments when the measurement
of admixture was increased. Compressive strength of concrete improves
when dose of mixture is expanded.

S. Mani Raj et al. 2019 In this study we utilized the ancient admixture such as egg albumen,
jaggery powder, egg shell & aloe Vera as admixtures in the concrete.
Traditional eco concrete not only improves the strength but also proves
its durability for centuries.

V. Giridhar 2019 Experimentation carried out for determining strength properties of a

new concrete for M20 grade nominal concrete using jaggery as
admixture. Adding of jaggery in concrete composition slows down the
hydration process; hence jaggery is a better retarder and it can be used
in deep foundations.
Prashant Abrol 2020 Studied about an alternative of Limestone in cement for sustainable
development in future. The tensile strength of concrete increases by the
addition of waste ceramic egg shell powder, jaggery and black gram in
cement. The Initial setting time of concrete increased with later on
strength due to the addition of black gram and jaggery.

Ahsan Aziz 2021 The testing has been carried out for evaluating and calculating the
properties of concrete using Sugar and Jaggery as admixtures in its
concrete. He concluded that the slump and compaction factor values
being amplified with increase in percentage of jaggery. Addition of
jaggery into the concrete work is acts as a thin layer over cement and
slows down the hydration process.

Abhishek Dandotiya et 2022 Experimentation carried out for determining strength properties of a new
al concrete for M30 grade nominal concrete using jaggery as admixture.
finally it is accomplished that the workability of concrete is being
superior with jaggery as admixture.
Sayali Panditrao Bende 2022 The report Emphasizes that using locally available materials such as
jaggery may improve Concrete features. The maximum compressive
strength of the concrete was increases after adding jaggery into the
concrete.

Suhail Ahmed et al 2022 In this research Aloe Vera Gel is used in concrete at the proportion of
0% ,0.5%,1% 1.5%,2%,2.5% to analyze its promising effects on
workability nd compressive strength of concrete. Mixture of aloe
Vera Gel showed good results on the properties of concrete in both
workability and compressive strength at 2.5% addition to the water.

A.S.Shalini et al. 2023 Have studied the behavior of concrete by adding Aloe Vera as a
natural admixture in Concrete. It is observed that at 0.5% proportion
of aloe Vera gel, we can see a high compressive strength of 34.63
N/mm2 at 28th day observation.

to 3.0% by adding of natural admixtures i.e. (jaggrey powder) at the age of 28 days. If further increase in the
adding of jaggery powder we can observe that there is a reduce in the strength value.
CONCLUSIONS

In this study series of the experiments have been conducted on concrete with the addition of Natural
Admixtures as an alternative of Chemical Admixtures in Concrete. In this Experiment Jaggery powder and
Aloe Vera was used as an alternative of chemical Admixtures in concrete at different percentages like 0%,
0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5%,2.0%, 2.5%, and 3.0% of the weight of the cement. The experiments were conducted on
M30 grade of concrete as per relevant IS-code practice. Based on the test results obtained from this study the
following conclusion can be drawn.
From the compressive strength test results for both Jaggery powder and Aloe Vera in the concrete grade i.e.
M30, it is found that with the addition of Jaggery powder and Aloe Vera strength is increased than the
conventional concrete.
• The maximum value obtained for M30 grade of concrete is at 2.5% of adding of aloe vera and 3% of
jaggery powder in the concrete. And the obtained compressive strength values are more when compared
with conventional mix.
• There is strength reduction with the addition of more than 2.5% of aloe vera in the concrete due to the
impurities present in the aloe vera.
CONCLUSIONS

From the above finding we can conclude that there is a remarkable variation in the split tensile strength calculated
by using compression testing machine.
• The maximum value obtained for M30 grade of concrete is at 2.5% of adding of aloe vera and 3% of jaggery
powder in the concrete. And the obtained split tensile strength values are more when compared with
conventional mix.
• Since these mixtures are eco-friendly they are not harmful to the environment, the usage of jaggery powder
and aloe Vera for the heavy construction are quite possible. Hence concrete specimens are made to find the
compressive strength and workability.
SCOPE OF FURTHER STUDY

The experimental study can be carried out for higher strength concretes like M35 and above. This
work was carried out on Natural Admixtures like other admixtures like egg shell, rice husk etc.. as an
alternative of chemical admixtures in concrete .So, that we can reduce the usage of cement and
cost of the project.
