PURPOSE OF PENMANSHIP

• A standard for the holistic development of a Lasallian

• Links the mind with the hand for improved concentration and better
reflection
• Develops attention to detail
• Displays courtesy, respect
• Signifies education, power
• Shows dedication, commitment
HISTORY

Developed and promoted by American Austin Norman Palmer, the Palmer Style of
Handwriting is a simplified version of the Spencerian Script. Its plainness and speed
allowed the writer to “compete” with the typewriter.
Prior to this, Platt Rogers Spencer’s Spencerian Script had been considered the
standard penmanship since the 1840s until Palmer took the lead toward the turn of the
century.
Br. Antony Ferdinand Kilbourn FSC brought the Palmer style of handwriting in the
Philippines in 1921 and was formally introduced in De La Salle College.

It has gone through minor modifications over the years, and is now more
appropriately referred to (in our context) as the Lasallian Style of Handwriting.
