REASONING
WHAT IS REASONING
In Mathematics, reasoning is the ability to
draw logical conclusions based on evidence
or stated assumptions.
TYPES OF REASONING
Inductive reasoning takes specific
examples to make a general rule.

Deductive reasoning takes general rule

and uses it to make a more specific
example.
INDUCTIVE REASONING
The type of reasoning that uses specific
examples to reach a general conclusion of
something.
The conclusion formed using inductive
reasoning is called a CONJECTURE.
A conjecture is an idea that may or may not
be correct.
EXAMPLE
Use inductive reasoning to predict the next
number
5 10 15 20 25 ?

30
EXAMPLE
Use inductive reasoning to predict the next
number
1 4 9 16 25 ?

36
EXAMPLE
The teacher gave the students easy
test/quizzes every week. Therefore, you can
conclude that the next quiz or test will be
__________.

We can conclude that the next quiz will be

easy.
EXAMPLE
My math teacher is strict.
My previous Math teacher is strict.
My cousins Math teacher is strict.
What can you say about all Math
teachers?

We can conclude that all Math Teachers

are strict.
EXAMPLE
1. Pick a number. 1. 3
2. Multiply the number 2. 310 = 30
by 10.
3. Add 8 to the product. 3. 30 8 = 38
4. Divide the sum by 2. 4. 38 2 = 19
5. And subtract 4.
5. 19 4 = 15
EXAMPLE
MAXIMUM TSUNAMI
EARTHQUAKE MAGNITUDE
HEIGHTS (m)

7.5 5 a. If the earthquake

7.6 9
magnitude is 8.5,
7.7 13
how high can the
tsunami be?
7.8 17
7.9 21 b. Can a tsunami occur
8.0 25 when the earthquake
8.1 29 magnitude is less
8.2 33
than 7? Explain your
8.3 37
answer.
Conclusions based on inductive
reasoning may not always be true. In
other words, a conjecture formed by
using inductive reasoning may be
incorrect.
EXAMPLE
11 (1)(101) = 1111
11 (2)(101) = 2222
11 (3)(101) = 3333
11 (4)(101) = 4444
11 (5)(101) = 5555
11 (6)(101) = ?
EXAMPLE
A simple arithmetic shows that the answer is 6666; hence it
is conjectured that the product of 11 and multiple of 101 is a
number where all digits are equal. But is 11 ()(101) = true
for all .
Suppose . Then which obviously does not satisfy the
previous conclusion. This method of disproving a statement
is to give a counterexample.
EXAMPLE
Study the pattern and determine the next figure.

Based on the number of sides

Triangle = 3 Quadrilateral = 4
Pentagon = 5 Hexagon = 6
EXAMPLE
Study the pattern and determine the next figure.
DEDUCTIVE
REASONING
DEDUCTIVE REASONING
It is a type of reasoning that uses
general procedures and principles
to reach a conclusion.
EXAMPLE
1. Pick a number. 1. n
2. Multiply the number 2. n10 = 10n
by 10.
3. Add 8 to the product. 3. 8 10n
4. Divide the sum by 2. 4. 4 5n
5. And subtract 4.
5. 4 5n 4 5n
EXAMPLE
Solve a Logic Puzzle
Each of the four friends Donna, Sarah,
Nikkie, and Xhanelle has a different pet
(fish, cat, dog and snake). From the
following clues, determine the pet of each
individual.
CLUES
1. Sarah is older than her friends who owns the cat
and younger than her friend who owns the dog.
2. Nikkie and her friend who owns the snake are
both of the same age and are the youngest
members of their group.
3. Donna is older than her friend who owns the
fish.
EXAMPLE

Filipino are religious. Vin is a Filipino.

Therefore, we can conclude that
__________.

We can conclude that Vin is religious.

EXAMPLE
Quadrilateral is a polygon with 4 sides.
Square have a 4 side. Therefore, we can
conclude that __________.

We can conclude that Square is a

Quadrilateral.
EXAMPLE
All numbers ending in 0 and 5 are divisible by
5. The numbers, 100 and 35 ends in 0 and 5.
Therefore, we can conclude that
__________.

We can conclude that the numbers 100

and 35 are divisible by 5.
EXAMPLE
All Filipino Heroes are brave.
Jose Rizal is a Filipino Hero.
Therefore, we can conclude that
__________.

We can conclude that Jose Rizal is brave.

EXAMPLE
Acute angles are less then 90 degrees.
Angle B measures 40 degrees.
Therefore, we can conclude that
__________.

We can conclude that Angle B is an acute

angle.
