DIVIDING WHOLE NUMBERS
 Division is the inverse of multiplication.
 To divide means to group a number into equal
parts.
 The dividend is the number being divided.
 The divisor is the number we will use to divide
the dividend.
 The result in division equation is the quotient.
Dividing by one-digit divisor using long division
Steps:
1. Divide the digit in the highest place value by
the divisor. 5 ÷ 4 =1
2. Write the partial quotient above the digit you
divided. Multiply the partial quotient 1 by the
divisor. 1 x 4 = 4
3. Write 4 below the digit which you divided.
Subtract 4 from 5. 5 - 4 = 1
4. Bring down the next digit, 0. Divide 10 by the
divisor 4. The answer is 2.
5. Wite 2 above the tens digit of the dividend.
Multiply the partial quotient by the divisor.
2 x 4 =8
6. Subtract 8 from 10. You get 2.
7. Bring down the last digit of the dividend, 0.
Divide 20 by 4. This gives you 5.
8. Write 5 above the ones digit of the dividend.

The answer, 125, is called quotient.

To check if the answer is right, multiply the
quotient by the divisor.

125 x 4 = 500

1. 448 ÷ 4
2. 639 ÷ 3
3. 525 ÷ 15

Numbers with Remainder

Sometimes, the numbers that we divide do not end up as

whole numbers. There will occasionally be some numbers that when
we divide would have some left over. These left over numbers are
called remainders. See the example below.
2. Multiply
9 x 4= 36
 To check if the answer is correct, multiply the quotient with the
divisor and add the remainder to the product.

917 x 4 = 3 668

3 668 + 2 = 3 670
TRY THIS!

1. 67÷ 5
2. 207 ÷ 4
3. 49 ÷ 4
