Barangay Bayanihan
Trina's class just finished their field trip in KidZania.
They got to take part of what happens in a community
through their mini-city. The students were able to take
the roles of bank teller, flight attendant, pilot, and
other
community helpers
that they see in a city.
Before they went home, Mr. Santos announced
their homework, "When you get home, try to get
to know the community helpers or workers in
your neighborhood.“ Trina thought of the people
in her neighborhood that help on their
community.
She thought of their village guard. Kuya Gino;
their street sweeper, Manang Pilar; and the
baker at the bread store where they often buy
pan de sal, Ate Linda. The following day. Trina
asked her mother to accompany her to
the barangay hall.
"Why are you going to the barangay hall?"
asked her mother. "Mr. Santos said that we
should get to know the people who help in
our community. I think that is a good place
to start," Trina answered.
"Oh yes, that is a great idea! I will go with
you after finishing our breakfast," Trina's
mother said. After eating their breakfast,
Trina and her mother went to the barangay
hall and looked for the barangay captain and
saw a man approach them.
"Good morning! We are looking for Mr. Reyes.
Is he here today?" Trina asked the man. "I am
Mr. Reyes, the barangay captain. What can I do
for you?" he asked with a smile. "Oh, I would
like to ask you few questions about our barangay
and the things you do as a barangay captain.
I hope you do not mind," Trina explained.
"No, I do not mind. If you like I could also
give you a tour here at our barangay hall and
health center" Mr. Reyes answered.
"By the way, Captain, I am Trina Legaspi and this is
my mother, Alice. Thank you very much for
accommodating us," Trina said. "You are welcome! I
am glad that there are people who are interested to
know what happens in our community."Mr. Reyes
showed them around the office where he introduced
some of his council members.
He explained that they meet every week to discuss the
problems in the barangay. He also explained that they
observe the laws and maintain peace and order with
the help of the barangay tanod. "What is a barangay
tanod?" Trina asked.
"Most barangay tanods are volunteers that
help patrol and make sure that the people in
our barangay are safe. They help our police
officers keep the place peaceful and orderly,"
explained Mr. Reyes.
"We also have our health officer and volunteer nurses
and doctors in the health center. It is a place where
people who need medical care can easily get help and
advice about their health condition for free," he
added.
"We also have our health officer and volunteer
nurses and doctors in the health center. It is a
place where people who need medical care can
easily get help and advice about their health
condition for free," he added.
But we give seminars, free vitamins for pregnant
women, or vaccines for the babies," Mr. Reyes smiled.
As they finished the tour, Mr. Reyes continued to
explain that it was not only him who works hard to
make the barangay function well. A lot of people work
together to keep it a better place for young people to
live in. That is why the barangay is called Barangay
Bayanihan.
