Tubes
Tube diameters in the range 5/8 in. (16mm) to 2in. (50mm) are used. Tube diameters in the
range 5/8 in. (16mm) to 2in. (50mm) are preferred for most duties, as they will give
More compact, and there fore cheaper, exchangers.
Standard diameters and wall thicknesses for steel tubes are given in Table12.3.

Tube-side passes
The arrangement of the pass partitions for 2, 4 and 6 tube passes
Shells
The British standard BS 3274 covers exchangers from 6in. (15 0mm) to 42in. (1067mm)
diameter; and the TEMA standards, exchangers up to 60in, (1520 mm)
Up to about 24in.(610mm) shells are normally constructed from standard, close
tolerance, pipe; above 24in. (61 0mm) they are rolled from plate.
Tube-sheet layout (tube count)
Shell types (passes)
The letters E,F,G,H,J are those used n the TEMA standards to designate the various types.
Support plates and tie rods
Segmental baffles are used some will be fabricated with closer tolerances,1/64in.
(0.4 mm), to act as support plates
The spacing ranges from around 1m for 16mm tubes to 2m for 25mm tubes. The baffles and
support plate are held together with tie rods and spacers.

SHELLAND TUBE EXCHANGERS: GENERAL DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS
Corrosion. The more corrosive fluid should be allocated to the tube-side. This will
Reduce the cost of expensive alloy or clad components.
Fouling. The fluid that has the greatest tendency to foul the heat-transfer surfaces should
be placed in the tubes. This will give better control over the design fluid velocity, and the
Higher allow able velocity in the tubes will reduce fouling. Also, the tubes will be easier to
clean.
