Topic: Types of Tools in the workshop: Measuring Tools

Teacher: Mr. S. Joseph
Objectives
By the end of the this PowerPoint lesson students should be able to:

 To be able to list the main classifications of the various types of tools in the
workshop;

 To identify various types of measuring tools and classify them accordingly;

 To explain the uses of the different measuring tools in the workshop.

INTRODUCTION
In the workshop many different types of tools are used to help create,
alter and fix materials.
INTRODUCTION
In this topic we will be talking about the various types of tools used to
bring objects in the workshop from one state to another, for example an
old piece of metal like the one seen below from:

This to this!
Types of Tools in the Workshop
Some of the categories of tools used to do these changes to
materials in the workshop include:
 Measuring Tools

 Striking Tools

 Holding Tools

 Marking Tools

 Cutting tools
For today’s class we will focus on Measuring Tools.
MEASURING TOOLS

Measuring tools are tools used to find and determine the

dimensions of an object.

What are dimensions?

Dimensions are considered to be all the different

measurements of an object, and these include length, width,
diameters, angles, thickness, depth, weight, mass and etc.
MEASURING TOOLS
There are two main types of measurements these category of tool is used
for:

1: Linear Measurement (for example measuring a length or a straight

line);

2: Angular measurement (for example, measuring angles).

MEASURING TOOLS
Examples of tools used for linear measurement
include Rulers and Measuring Tapes;

Examples of tools used for Angular measurement

include Protractors and Engineer Squares.
Types of Linear Measuring Tools
RULER
A ruler, sometimes called a rule or line gauge, is an instrument
used in geometry, technical drawing as well as engineering and
building to measure distances or to create straight lines.

The ruler is a straight edge which may also contain standardized

lines to measure distances.

MEASURING TAPE

A measuring tape (or tape

measure as it is also referred
to) is a flexible ruler.

It consists of a ribbon of cloth, plastic, fiber glass, or

metal strip with measurement markings. metal-strip
measuring tapes are typically what is used in the
workshop.
Types of angular measuring tools
Protractor
 A protractor is used to measure angles . They typically have two sets of
numbers going in opposite directions to allow for the reading of angle sizes
from both sides of the scale.
Types of angular Measuring tools (ctd.)
Engineer’s Square
 An engineer’s square is a measuring tool used in the
workshop to measure out right angles on a workpiece. It is
also used to mark out straight lines on workpieces.

The engineer’s square is considered an angular measuring tool as it

measures for right angles (90o).
