NASAL OBSTRUCTION

DR MD KHALID ASAD
MBBS,MPH,MS(ENT)
ASSISTANT PROFESSOR(ENT)
Nasal obstruction is of two types
Unilateral Nasal Obstruction
Bilateral Nasal Obstruction
Common causes of Unilateral Nasal
Obstructon
Vestibule
 Faruncle
 Vestibulitis
 Stenosis of nares
 Atresia
 Nasoalveolar cyst
 Papilloma
 Squamous cell carcinoma
Nasal cavity
 Foreign body
 DNS
 Hypertrophied turbinates
 Synechia
 Antrochaanal polyp
 Rhinolith
 Bleeding polypus of septum
 Benign or malignant neoplasms of nose or paranasal
sinuses
Nasopharynx
Unilateral choanal atresia
Common causes of bilateral nasal
obstruction
Vestibule
Bilateral vestibulitis
Collapsing nasal alae
Stenosis of nares
Congenital atresia of nares
 Nasal cavity
 Acute or chronic rhinitis
 Sinusitis
 Rhinitis medicamentosa
 Allergic rhinitis
 Hypertrophied turbinates
 DNS
 Nasal polyps
 Atrophic rhinitis
 Septal haematoma
 Septal abscess
 Bilateal choanal atresia
Nasopharynx
Adenoid hyperplasia
Large antrochoanal polyp
Adhesion
Benign or malignant tumour
Faruncle or Boil
Acute infection of the hair follicle by Staphylococcus aurius.
Trauma from picking of the nose or plucking the nasal
vibrissae is the usual predisposing factor.
The lesion may be small but exquisitely painful and tender
Never be squised or prematurely incised as the danger of
spread of infection to the cavernous sinus through venous
thrombophlebitis
Faruncle may rupture spontanously
Treatment includes warm compression,analgesics,topical
and systemic antibiotic
Incision and drainage may be required
Stenosis and Atresia of the nares
Accidental or surgical trauma of the nasal tip or
vestibule can lead to stenosis of anterior nares
Destructive inflammatory lesions also cause stenosis
Congenital atresia is due to non-canalization of the
epithelial pluge
Stenosis of the anterior nares can be corrected by
reconstructive surgery
