1.1 Vài nét về xây dựng
công trình ngầm
Khoảng giữa thế kỷ 19, ngành Đường sắt phát triển mạnh mẽ kéo theo công nghệ đào hầm ra đời để
phục vụ thi công các công trình tàu điện ngầm. Đầu tiên là công nghệ đào hầm nổ mìn cổ điển. Nhược
điểm của nó là thi công đào hầm mất nhiều thời gian, độ an toàn thấp vì nổ mìn gây rung chấn, thời gian
thi công rất chậm, đặc biệt khó khăn khi thi công các đường hầm dài. Thời kỳ đó, cơ khí, tự động hóa
phát triển, công nghệ mới phát triển... là cơ sở thôi thúc các kỹ sư hầm tìm ra công nghệ mới nhằm phục
vụ thi công đào hầm được dễ dàng và an toàn hơn.
Năm 1846, tại Turin (Italia), mẫu máy TBM tiền thân đã xuất hiện, được thử nghiệm và đưa vào áp dụng
thi công hầm. Cỗ máy này rất cồng kềnh, áp dụng thực tế không hiệu quả. Gần 100 năm sau, đến năm
1930, J.S. Robbins mới nghiên cứu và cho ra đời mẫu máy TBM đầu tiên với những tính năng tương đối
giống như máy TBM ngày nay. Những năm 1950, TBM được áp dụng rộng rãi trong đào hầm núi đá.
Đến nay, máy TBM ngày càng được hoàn thiện hơn và trở thành công nghệ số 1 trong thi công các công
trình liên quan đến đào hầm như giao thông, thủy điện.
