EDUCATION SYSTEM IN UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

Primary and secondary school is compulsory for all students in the

Unites States.
Student age level differ from state to state.
American students start education from Kindergarten (age 5 to 6 years
old) to complete secondary education in 12th grade (age 18 years old).

Primary Education

Primary education in the US ranges from Kindergarten to

fifth grade (grade 5), but sometimes ranges from fourth
grade (grade 4), sixth grade (grade 6), and eighth grade
(grade 8). It depends on the curriculum system in the school
district.
Learning standard refers to Adequate Yearly Program.
The Secondary Education

Secondary education level in the US is divided

into two phase that are middle school (junior
high) and senior high.

Middle School (Junior High)

It starts from sixth, seventh, eighth, and ninth grade. At this level,
middle school is determined of demographic factor like number
of middle school students, also at this level students are given
the freedom to choose the desired subject and use the moving
class system.

Senior High

This level is advanced level after middle school, usually this level
starts from ninth grade (freshman), tenth grade (sophomores),
eleventh grade (juniors), and twelfth grade (seniors).
At this level, students are required to take a number of
mandatory and elective subjects.
The Mandatory Subjects Include :

 Science, includes chemistry, biology, and

physics
 Mathematics, includes algebra, geometry,
pre-calculus, and statistics
 English, includes literature, humanities and
verbal (practice)
 Physical education, includes taking physical
exercise
The Elective Subjects include :

 Atletics, includes cross country, swimming, football, basketball, softball, wrestling,

boxing, cheerleading, and marching band

 Career and technical education, includes agriculture, business, family and

consumer science, and health jobs

 Computer word processing, includes programming and design

 Foreign Language, includes French and Spanish (common) and Italian, Japanese,
Chinese (uncommon)

 Performing Arts /Visual Arts, includes choir, orchestra, drama, fine arts, and
photography

 Publishing, includes journalism, student yearbook and magazine

Education in America is provided free of charge, except for
tuition fee. But, now there is new rule of government for state
university level education in the United States to provide free
programs

Each subject has a specific credit score. The courses usually have
three to five credit score. Full-time courses at most college are 12 or
15 credits and certain course must be taken as a requirement for
graduation.

 Tranfer
If students apply to a new university before earning a degree, any
credits earned can be used to earn a degree at the new university. It
means, that students can transfer to other universities and graduate at
the same time.

 Public University
Every 50 American States has at least one public university and
several public college
Example : Washington State University and University of Machigan.

 Private University
American private university and college are smaller than public
university.

 Community College
Community college is a two years college that give transferable associate degree
(diploma) as well as certification.
Transferable university degree are generally an associate of arts (arts diploma) or an
associate of science (science diploma).
Non-transferable are the associate of applied science degree and certificate of
completion.

 Institute Of Technology
It is a college that provides science and technology education at least
for four years. Several graduate program that offer short-term course.
