How Cameroon and African states are and
should be responding to COVID-19 now and
after

10
Cameroon/response to COVID-19
 Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, schools were closed all over
Africa. Today, over 250 million primary and secondary children
are out of school in Africa.

 As a result, educational institutions are having to rethink their

approach, becoming more digitally led, and shifting to online
platforms.

 Most African countries especially Cameroon and various

stakeholders have implemented digital and distance education.

 Some countries especially Cameroon opened classes to

students and pupils in examination classes

Cameroon implemented digital and distance

education through CRTV

12
How effective is digital/ online learning in
Cameroon

13
Is digital learning effective in Cameroon?
 Digital learning kept most of the learners awake and active in
Cameroon, through TV and radio

 These strategies have been successful in some ways, but

challenges remain as the poor children who neither have
access to mobile phones or TV, or even radios are excluded.

 Presently, 89% of students in sub-Saharan Africa do not have

access to household computers and 82% lack internet access.
(UNESCO)

 This means that these online classes cannot cater for all
students.
14
Is digital learning effective in Cameroon?

 Cameroon universities covered a great percentage of

second semester program through digital methods

 Secondary schools covered part of the second and

third term program through digital methods before
return to physical classrooms

 Digital methods are less effective in secondary

schools consequently they are not realising much
success as observed from results

Proposed solutions perculiar to
Africa and Cameroon in particular
 Parents should equip their children with minicomputers

 The electricity network should be extended to the rural areas

 There should be training geared towards empowering teachers .

 ICT should be made compulsory to all the students/pupils in Cameroon

 Proprietors should equip computer laboratories with functional and

modern computers.

 Some Television and Radio stations in Cameroon could focus mainly on

e-learning and teaching

22
What is the future of digital/ online learning
in education in Cameroon and Africa

23
What is the future of Digital learning
 The challenges of digital learning need to be
addressed immediately, they can seriously
affect the academic career of our students

 Africa is going to experience a greater shift from

traditional education to digital education they
have not been exposed to for a long

 Digital learning has come to stay in Africa and

Cameroon forever, even after COVID-19
24
What is the future of Digital learning
 Technological innovations and internet use has
become a part of higher education in Africa.

 These innovations, like COVID-19, have come to

disrupt teaching and learning pedagogies.

 To make education more meaningful to all students,

Africa must make education more accessible and less
expensive through digital methods.

 Education should be a right and not a privilege.

25
Conclusion

 Whether we like it, accept it or not, digital learning has come to

stay.

 Digital learning has not come to replace traditional education it

should be used as complementary method

 Digital learning is still a convenient option with virtually endless

options for international students all over the world.

 Problems hindering digital education needs to be addressed by

all stakeholders, so that Cameroonians and Africans will better
embrace and enjoy the benefits from it
