THE EARTH’S DIFFERENT LANDSCAPES
LO: Learning about the earth’s climatic zones.
Looking at how the Earth’s zones affect the weather.

Lesson 2
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WEATHER AND CLIMATE?

• Weather changes daily and it is the temperature and conditions for the day. Often
we describe the weather as hot, rainy, sunny, humid, overcast, freezing or snowy.
• What are some other words we can use to describe the weather?
• Climate is the average weather condition of a place over a long period of time.
The climate of a location is often linked to its location in the world. Places near
the equator will have a hotter climate than places near the North and South Poles
which will have a colder climate.
TROPICAL ZONE Tropical rainforest, Malaysia,
Asia.

• In the tropics it is always hot. Average daily

temperatures are about 30 degrees. The sun shines
from high in the sky.
• Around Equator, heavy rain falls all year. Strong
sunlight and high rainfall give perfect conditions for
plants to grow. Trees and plants grow faster, taller and
in greater numbers than anywhere else on the Earth’s
surface.
POLAR ZONE

• Polar lands are cold. 90 percent of Greenland is covered by an ice

sheet. The sun shines from low in the sky; There is no sunlight at
all in the midwinter. Temperature falls as low as -50 degrees and
large areas are covered by ice and snow.

Greenland
TEMPERATE ZONE

• Temperate lands lie between the tropical

and polar zones. They can be hot in
summer, but are not hot all year. They can
be. Cold in winter, but the cold lasts for
only a few months.

HOW CAN THE WORLD BE DIVIDED UP?
LO: Understanding how geographers divide the world up

Key Notes:
Continent - area of land
covering a large area of the
Earth’s surface.
Equator – the imaginary line
dividing the northern from the
southern hemisphere.
Hemisphere – one half of the
Earth

Lesson 3
One way of spliting the world is
dividing it into northern and southern
hemisphere. The Equator is the
imaginary line between the two
hemispheres.

Can you say in which hemisphere

is The UK located?

Australia?
Southern VS Northern Hemisphere

Hemisphere, summer takes place from June to September, Winter, meanwhile,
takes place from December to March. Whereas, Summer in the Southern

Winter – December- February
Spring – March-May
Summer – June-August
Autumn – September – November

Fill the box with the correct answers for Australia

Another way of dividing up the world is into
land and water. 70% of the earth’s surface is
covered by Oceans and seas. The surface is
divided into seven continents: North America,
South America, Europe, Africa, Asia,
Antarctica, Australia.

Only six of seven continents are inhabited. No one

lives permanently in Antarctica, only penguins
