RESOUR

CES The urgent

call to action
01 - WHAT IS NATURAL
RESOURCES?

In environmental science, resources

usually refer to natural resources. These
are raw materials found in nature and
produced by nature which humans use for
sustenance, construction, and
manufacturing. They are classified along a
few different dimensions, including
renewable vs. nonrenewable, living vs.
non-living.

01 – INEXHAUSTIBLE
NATURAL
RESOURCESRenewable Nature has blessed us with an
Resources unlimited supply of resources such
as air, water and sunlight. These
resources are called inexhaustible
resources. They are also called
renewable resources.
01– INEXHAUSTIBLE
NATURAL RESOURCES?

Renewable resources are those which can

be generated again after it is used. For
example water, wood and sunlight are
some examples of renewable resources.
As the human population is increasing at an astounding rate, we
02 – EXHAUSTIBLE have reached a number of 7.4 billion today! Naturally, this means
that we are utilizing more and more natural resources. If we go at
NATURAL this rate, we will soon reach a day when nature will not be able to
RESOURCES provide us with resources such as plants and trees, animals,
Non -Renewable mineral ores, and fossil fuels such as coal, petroleum and natural
Resources gas. Thus, these resources are exhaustible. These resources are
called exhaustible or non-renewable resources.

If the use of these resources is not monitored carefully, there will

be no food for our predecessors to eat, no energy for them to
power their machines and no material for them to build a shelter
with. This is why it is important to understand which resources
are exhaustible and which are not, and to practice sustainable
development. This is nothing but the development that meets the
needs of the present generations without compromising the ability
of future generations to meet their own needs
A non-renewable resource is that which exhausts after frequent
02 – EXHAUSTIBLE usage and sometimes it takes a long time to get generated like
NATURAL RESOURCES? natural gas. One of the examples of a non-renewable natural
resource is coal. Just like coal, there are many natural resources that
are limited which means they cannot be recycled again. Most of the
non-renewable resources cannot be recycled and thus it is important
in the conservation of natural resources. There are some natural
resources which have very high demand but with less availability.

Some non-renewable natural resources are:

•Fossil fuels: Natural resources like coal, natural gas and petroleum
can be over someday i.e. they are exhaustible. It takes millions of
years for a dead organism to get converted into fuels. They are
consumed at a much faster rate than the rate by which it is formed.
The excess burning of fossil fuels leads to air pollution as it gives
out carbon dioxide which is a greenhouse gas
01 - WHAT IS IT?

Conservation of
Natural Resources

It is very important that these natural resources are conserved as they are getting
exhausted at an alarming rate. Apart from that, it is having an adverse effect on the
environment which is indirectly causing harm to live beings. By following the
below tips, we can conserve the natural resources:
•Minimize the use of vehicles
•Use water sparingly and do not waste water
DISTRIBUTION
OF RESOURCES The urgent
call to action
03 – DISTRIBUTION OF NATURAL
RESOURCES
Different regions have access to different
renewable or nonrenewable natural resources
such as freshwater, fossil fuels, fertile soil, or
timber based on their geographic location
and past geologic processes. Access, or the
lack thereof, contributes to a place’s
economic development, political
relationships, and culture.
How Are Resources
Distributed?

Resources are distributed in different ways and in different

amounts throughout the world. Often the result of past geologic
processes such as volcanic activity or tectonic movement, this
unequal distribution means that various quantities of certain
resources are only available to some people. The distribution of
natural resources depends on a number of physical factors
like terrain, climate and altitude. All these factors are not the
same everywhere and vary from place to place on the earth.
04
For example, the Great Plains region of the
United States is known for its abundance of
fertile soil. As a result, its main industry is Addressing the climate
agriculture. Corn, soybeans, and wheat are change challenge
globally exported from this region and serve as
the main economy. On the other side of the
spectrum, the desert southwestern region of the
United States depends on the Central Arizona
Project canals to transport water from the
Colorado River in order to support agriculture
and urban areas. Arizona’s right to use water
from this river stems from the Colorado
Compact, an agreement established in 1922.

SUSTAINABLE
RESOURCE USE The urgent

MANAGEMENT
01 - WHAT IS SUSTAINABLE
RESOURCE USE MANAGEMENT?

The term sustainable resources

management refers to developing
and implementing methods and
solutions for using and protecting
resources such as water, energy and
raw materials as well as treating
waste-streams and -waters.
