CLASSIFICATION OF PRODUCTION SYSTEM

• Production system are the means by which we transform resources inputs to create useful
goods and services as output.
• The activities or combination of activities which is mainly performed to convert a given
raw materials into a product of diff. Shapes, sizes with or without making any kind of
changes.
A. CONTINUOUS PRODUCTION SYSTEM

• It is also known as flow production system


• A types of production system in which materials being processed are continuously in motion.
• Manufacturing of similar products (products standardization)
• Goods are produced on large scale for stocking or selling.
For example:
production of FMCG like soaps, biscuits, noodles, etc.
FEATURES OF CONTINUOUS PRODUCTION SYSTEM

• Flow of production is continuous. It is not intermittent.


• The products are standardization.
• Products are produced on predetermined quality standard.
• Standard routing sheets and schedules are prepared.
B. INTERMITTENT MANUFACTURING SYSTEM

• In intermittent production system, goods and services are produced to fulfill the orders of
customer rather than keeping them in stock for future transaction.
• In this system, products are produced in different sizes.
• The design of these products goes on changing.
• It keeps changing according to the design and size of products. Therefore, these system is
very flexible.
For example:
gold, tailor,etc.
TYPES OF INTERMITTENT PRODUCTION SYSTEM:

a. Job or unit production system

• In this production system, a single unit or a job is completed by one or group of people at one time in accordance to
the order of customers.
• Here, the products or services differ in accordance with customer order.

For example:
making furniture, making bridge.
b. Batch production system

• In batch production system, the production is done on batch i.e. large number of similar products
is made at one time in accordance with order of customers or future demand of customers.
• The second batch will be differing from first batch and second batch production start after
completion of first batch only.
For example:
manufacturing of pharmacy products, electronic goods, printing of books, etc.

a. Process improvement

• Process improvement is a crucial issue for operations managers as it involves identifying and
implementing strategies to enhance operational processes and increase efficiency within an
organization.
• The goal of process improvement is to streamline operations, eliminate waste, reduce costs, and
improve overall productivity.
b. Global perspective

• With the development of technology in transportation and communication the whole world has turned into
global village.
• Knowingly and unknowingly every products and services is competing Ina global level.
• In such scenario, operation Managers must carefully Weigh their option which includes:

I. Outsourcing their operation to low- wages areas.


II. Reduction of operation cost.
III. Improvement in productivity.
C. Innovation

• Innovation is one of the keys possibilities that provide value to an organizations.


• Operation Managers must try to innovate in every aspect so that they can sustain and succeed in dynamic market.
• Managers can innovate in:

a. Design
b. Process
c. Use of internet
d. Customer service
e. Productivity increment, etc.
d. Supply Chain Management

• Operations managers need to ensure an efficient and effective supply chain that
encompasses procurement, transportation, warehousing, and distribution.
• This involves managing suppliers, optimizing inventory levels, and minimizing lead
times to meet customer demand.
e. Mass customization

• Different country have difference culture and preference.


• Customizing products as according to culture and preference is very challenging task for
operation Managers.
