MOTION IN A

STRAIGHT LINE
2.2 Position, distance, displacement
Objectives

By the end of the lesson students should be able to:

• Find the position of an object on coordinate axis as well as using position

time graph Your Tet Here
• Find the distance and displacement of an object in motion

Your Text Here

Keywords:

Displacement, distance, position, initial, final, vector, origin, rate

LO: CROSS PRODUCT

CROSS PRODUCT: STARTER

Keywords:

Circular, velocity, average, acceleration, centripetal, centrifugal

LO: Finding the position of an object on co-ordinate axis and using graph

POSITION VECTOR

The position vector shows the location of an object with respect to a

reference point. A position vector is usually written with the symbol r.

To know the position of an object you must know the reference point(origin)

LO: CALCULATING DISTANCE AND DISPLACEMENT

DISTANCE AND DISPLACEMENT

Distance is the length of the actual path travelled by a body between its initial and
final position.

1. It is a scalar quantity.
2. Distance is always positive.
3. To measure distance, add all the path lengths irrespective of direction.
4. The value of distance changes depending on the path taken.

Keywords:

Displacement, distance, position, initial, final, vector, origin, rate, reference

LO: CALCULATING DISTANCE AND DISPLACEMENT

DISTANCE AND DISPLACEMENT

Displacement is the change in position of an object in a fixed direction. It is the

shortest or the straight line path measured from the initial position to the final posi-
tion. It is denoted by Δr = r2 – r1

In one-dimension Δx = x2 – x1
Where x1 and x2 are the initial and final position of the object respectively

1. Displacement is the change in position of an object in a fixed direction.

2. It is the shortest or the straight line path measured from the initial position to the final
position.
3. It is a vector quantity.
4. Displacement can be positive, negative or zero.
5. Displacement is always one unique direct path between two points.
