DVD, type of optical disc used for data storage and
as a platform for multimedia.

The acronym DVD stands for "digital video

disc" or "digital versatile disc."
In 1995 two groups of companies-one led by
Sony Corporation and Philips Electronics NV and
the other by Toshiba Corporation and Time
Warner Inc. - agreed on a common format for
their competing second-generation compact
disc technologies, and in 1996 the first DVD
players went on sale in Japan.

DVD-ROM (Read-Only
MemoRy):
DVD-ROM stands for Digital Versatile Disc - Read-Only
Memory. It is a DVD that can only be read, not written to or
erased. DVD-ROMs are typically used for distributing
software, movies, music, and other types of data that need to
be read only to prevent modification or deletion of the
content.
DVD-R (RecoRdaBle):

DVD-R discs can be recorded on once, after which

the data cannot be erased or overwritten.
They are commonly used for creating personal
video or data backups.
DVD+R
(RecoRdaBle):
Similar to DVD-R, these discs can be recorded on once, but
they use a different recording format. They are also
commonly used for personal video or data backups.
DVD-RW (RewRITaBle):

DVD-RW is a rewritable format that can be recorded,

erased, and rewritten multiple times.
DVD-RW discs can be read on most DVD players and
DVD-ROM drives.
DVD+RW (RewRITaBle):

DVD+RW discs can be recorded, erased, and re-

recorded multiple times, offering flexibility for data
storage and recording purposes.
DVD-RAM (Random Access
MemoRy):
DVD-RAM discs are rewritable and feature a robust error-
correction mechanism, making them suitable for
applications where frequent rewriting and random access are
required, such as data backup and archival storage.
