 Contours are lines on a map that join places of the same height above sea level.
 Contours make patterns showing the relief or shape of the land.
 Contour lines never cross one another.
 Contour lines can join to form a single line only where there is a vertical cliff.
 Contour lines never split.
 When contours are far apart the slope is gentle.
 When contours are close together the slope is steep.
 When contours are evenly spaced the slope is uniform.
 The difference in altitude between successive contours is known as the contour
interval or the vertical interval.
