Contours are lines on a map that join places of the same height above sea level.
Contours make patterns showing the relief or shape of the land.
Contour lines never cross one another.
Contour lines can join to form a single line only where there is a vertical cliff.
Contour lines never split.
When contours are far apart the slope is gentle.
When contours are close together the slope is steep.
When contours are evenly spaced the slope is uniform.
The difference in altitude between successive contours is known as the contour
interval or the vertical interval.
