The Ospina Pérez Bridge is a suspension bridge that crosses the Magdalena River,
connecting the departments of Tolima and Cundinamarca at the height of the cities of
Girardot and Flandes.The bridge was inaugurated by President Mariano Ospina Pérez
on January 5, 1950 and that's why it has his name.
• From its construction until the Carmen de Apicalá bypass was opened, all
traffic from Bogotá to the south-east of the country passed through this bridge.
However, currently, it is still the route for travelers coming from the
department of Tolima and the southern departments of the country to the city,
its surroundings and the capital, which is why long traffic jams are frequent on
weekends. , long weekends and vacation times in general.
• It is a suspension bridge with cables anchored to the ground, with two metal
towers supported by the ground and with a metal lattice deck reinforced with
concrete. Several vertical hangers transfer the loads from the deck to the cables
that in turn are supported by the two towers.
DESIGN AND DIMENSIONS
• The Ospina bridge, located in Colombia, was designed by the Colombian
engineer Guillermo Gonzales Zuleta. This bridge is an important road
infraestrucrure that crosses the Magdalena river andd connect different regions
of the country.
• The Ospina bridge has toral lenght of approximately 1.1 kilometers and
consists of six sections, with the central sections being de longest at
approximately 350 meter. Its width approximately 20 meters, wich allows
vehicles to circulate in both directions.
