agreed to get a tutor to meet the intellectual needs of Jose…
Rizal’s private tutors…
Maestro Celestino
Maestro Lucas Padua
Maestro Leon Monroy…
tutor in Latin and Spanish..He was a classmate of Don Francisco… Leon Monroy died after five months of being a tutor to the young Jose
Don Francisco decided to send Jose
to Binan for a formal schooling.
Paciano accompanied him to Binan
in June 1869.
They took the carromata and reach
Binan almost night time.
They went straight to the house of
Rizal’s Aunt where he is expected to stay. That same night, Rizal’s cousin - Leandro took Jose for a sightseeing in the town…
His cousin noticed that Jose did not enjoy
the trip. Instead, he felt homesick.
The following day, Paciano brought Jose to
the house of Maestro Justiniano Aquino Cruz…
It was just 30 meters away from his aunt’s
house.
The school was actually an extension of
the house of the school teacher…
After introducing Jose to Maestro Cruz, he
left and went back to Calamba… First day in school…
Jose was asked by his teacher if he knew Spanish and
Latin. His response was in the affirmative for both questions. The boys in his class laughed especially Pedro – the bully of the class and happens to be the son of Maestro Cruz.. The teacher stopped the noise immediately..
Rizal’s description of his teacher…
“He was a tall thin man, with a sharp nose and a body bent slightly forward. He usually wore a sinamay Camisa. He knew by heart what he is teaching.” First fight….. He cannot forget how Pedro laughed at him earlier. While his teacher was taking his rest, he met Pedro and challenged him to a fight… Pedro accepted his challenged because he taught he will win… They wrestled furiously in the classroom to the glee of their classmates, Rizal won..
After the class in the afternoon, another classmate –Andres
Lakundanan/Salandanan challenged him to an armed wrestling… he accepted the challenge but lost it… but these was not the last.. There were a few more… he won some and lost some…..
To get even with him in his superiority inside the
class, his classmates would tell their teacher about his participation in the fights and the teacher would always punish him with a blow to his butt or hands… His painting lessons…….
Near the school was the house of an old
painter- Juancho.. He is the father in law of Maestro Cruz… Jose spent many hours in his studio. Juancho freely gave him lessons in drawing and painting. He was impressed by the artistic talent of Jose.. He was accompanied by his classmate Jose Guevarra.. They became apprentices of the old painter. Later, they became the favorite painters of the class…. Daily Life in Binan….
Attends mass or studies his lessons at 4 am..
After attending mass, he looks for his favorite fruit –The Mabolo He eats his breakfast (rice and two fried sardines). Then off to school.. ends at 10 am and goes home for lunch If there is good food, he and his my cousin were asked to bring it to the house of his other cousins. He takes his lunch then off to his bedroom to study his lessons.. He goes back to school at 2 pm and ends at 5 pm… Before going home, he plays a little with his cousin… Dinner ..… prayer……then sleep…. After a year and a half, Rizal finished his studies and surpassed all his classmates. Before he left, he went to church andtook some pebbles in the river as souvenirs… he bade farewell to his teacher and classmates…. Jose came home in December 1871. He took the steamer -Talim alone from Binan to Calamba…. A friend of his father, Arturo Camps looked after him in the steamer… His parents and siblings were happy to see him home.. They celebrated Christmas joyfully… The imprisonment of Dona Lolay…. Before June of 1872, Dona Teodora was arrested on a malicious charged that she aided his brother Jose Alberto in poisoning his wife Teodora Formosa.. When Jose Alberto went abroad, his wife had an affair.. Dona Lolay discovered it.. Fearing that She will tell his brother, Teodora Formoso connived with an officer of the Guardia civil to file a case against Dona Lolay… Dona Lolay was sent to the Sta. Cruz Jail… She was forced to walk 50 km… This brought so much pain for the young Jose… The martyrdom of GOMBURZA… Another incident shocked the Rizal Family in 1872.. Fathers Gomez, Burgos and Zamora were executed because they were implicated in the Cavite Mutiny. Paciano is very close to Fr. Burgos.. He was his teacher’s pet…
He stayed with Fr. Bugos when he was
still a student in the College of San Jose..
This incident led to Paciano quitting
school because of fear that he might be linked to Fr. Burgos and would suffer the same fate… Origin of Binan
One theoretical claim that Biñan had
originated from the name of a big tree called Banyan or Banian (Ficus benjamina Linn. ) then Spaniard hispanized the term and called the town Biñan . Since the ficus trees was unusual to the area and people had not heard of it, it was then disregarded. Another theory is the town’s name might came from the Greek term, Banyan which means trader or Mercader, Accordingly, There are considerable number of traders flourishing within the town during the Spanish period in which the current name Biñan might have originated. Some parishioners believed that the town’s name came from the word “Binyagan” which means baptized or baptismal place. During the Spanish Era, the town was named Parochia de San Isidro de Biñan which is now the emblem of the church. This is the place where Jose P. Rizal studied during his stay in Biñan, now only the adobe walls and old tamarind tree, bunga china and Ilang-Ilang trees can be seen…
