Maghinay & Pelayo presentation

what is earth
day?
Earth Day is an annual celebration that raises awareness about environmental issues and promotes
conservation efforts across the globe. Several events and individuals in the United States from the
1960s to the 1970s inspired this occasion, which then grew into the worldwide phenomenon we know
today. In our case, we have to thank the late Senator Jose W. Diokno, also known as “Ka Pepe,” for
bringing it here!
Who is “Ka
Pepe”?
Senator Jose W. Diokno was a prominent human rights advocate during the Martial Law era. Not only
that, he was also a key figure in environmental conservation. He pushed for laws that protect the
environment, including safeguarding natural resources, preserving biodiversity, and promoting
sustainable practices.
Ka Pepe’s Earth
Day Advocacy
Earth Day in the Philippines started during the 1970s, following the United States. Two years later,
Senator Diokno sponsored a Senate resolution that officially designated April 22 as Philippine Earth
Day. This resolution formalized the observance of the occasion and encouraged Filipinos to
participate in environmental activities.

By actively participating in these activities, students develop
a strong sense of ownership, realizing that they have a role
to play in maintaining a clean and inviting environment.
Furthermore, clean-up drives promote a sense of discipline
and organization among students.
Filipinos also come up with creative ways to celebrate Philippine
Earth Day. From awareness campaigns to art exhibitions and
cultural performances, there is no shortage of ways to promote
sustainability and a better environment for all.
planet v.s
plastics
This year, the theme of the annual celebration focuses on ''Planet vs
Plastics,'' which emphasizes the goal to achieve a 60% reduction in
plastic by 2040, educate the public on its negative effect on
biodiversity, and demand policies and technologies that correspond to a
plastic-free world.
The Department of Environment
and Natural Resources (DENR)

is launching on April 22 the Earth Day Every Day Project to mobilize

the youth in curbing plastic pollution and to strengthen the fight
against the use of plastic. Earth Day Every Day Project is a plastics
collection competition among students nationwide. It aims to engage
the youth on the importance of recycling plastics and to foster a
culture of environmental responsibilities in line with the values of
scouting.
