EARTH’S
GEOSPHERE
_______________________________________

PREPARED BY:
SANDIE B. FAJARDO
OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson the students should be able to:
a. recognize an object that is part of Earth’s Geosphere,
b. compare and contrast the compositional layers and
mechanical layers of earth as well as the different types of
rocks,
c. distinguish the different processes of rock cycle from each
other; and
d. create a performance related to the interaction of
geosphere to other earth’s system through differentiated
activities.
Elicit: “BRING ME”
Objective:
a. To recall the students’ knowledge about the Earth’s Geosphere ;
b. Recognize an object that is part of Earth’s Geosphere; and
c. To define Earth Geosphere based on students’ prior knowledge and information gathered from this
activity.
Procedure:
1. The students will be grouped into three (3).
2. Each group will go outside the room and bring at least 2 (if available) examples of an object which
are part of Earth’s Geosphere. If it’s impossible to bring, take a picture of it instead.
3. After that, return to the room and answer the following questions.
4. Each group will only be given three (3) minutes to accomplish the task.
5. Remember that this is a group activity and you will be graded based on the rubric below.
Rubric: 1. Teamwork and Cooperation- 5 points
2. Time Management - 5 points
3. Neatness and Orderliness - 5 points
Total - 15 points
Elicit: “BRING ME”
Questions:
1. Where these objects originally located? Where
can we find them?
2. Are these objects solid in form?
3. How these objects related to Geosphere?
4. Based on the prior knowledge and information
you have gathered from the questions, how can
you define geosphere?
GEOSPHERE
1. The word "geosphere" comes from the Greek words "geo,"
meaning earth, and "sphaira," meaning ball or sphere.
2. According to National Geographic Society, Geosphere consists of
the interior and surface of Earth, both of which are made up of
rocks.
3. Includes the rocks, minerals, and soil of the crust, the mantle
formed mostly of magma, and a very hot metallic core.

Next Activity:
Using the previous grouping,
each group should select two (2)
representatives.
Engage: I’ll Act, You Guess
Instruction:
1. Each group’s representatives will pick a word from the box.
2. From the word that they had picked, use it in a
dramatic/horrific/comedic/tragic line or sentence and act.
Ex: “Ding, ang Bato? DARNA!”
3. And the other group members will guess the object/s used in the line
or sentence that are part of the Geosphere.
Ex. Bato or Rock
4. Each group will be given 2 minutes to prepare for their lines/act.
Explore: “You Complete Me”
Procedure:
1. Same groupings will be used in this activity.
2. Every group will be given a puzzle of picture and they need to arrange it.
3. After they arrange the puzzle they need to answer the given questions
provided with supplemental reading materials.
4. Each group should finish this activity in 10 minutes.
5. Remember that this is a group activity and you will be graded based on the
rubric below.
Rubric: 1. Teamwork and Cooperation - 5 points
2. Time Management - 5 points
3. Neatness and Orderliness - 5 points
Total - 15 points
Explain: “I Deserve an Explanation”
Objectives of the activity:
In this activity, the students will compare and contrast the
compositional layers and mechanical layers of earth as well as the different
types of rocks and distinguish the different processes of rock cycle from each
other.
Instruction:
1. The students will present and describe the picture using the questions on
their respective topic from the activity in Explore. Each group be given 5
minutes to present.
2. Using the rubric in Explore: Additional criterion will be added in grading
the students presentation which is Overall Presentation- 10 points.
EARTH’S STRUCTURE
1. What are the 3 compositional layers?
-Core, Mantle and Crust (Continental and Oceanic)
2. How crust, mantle and core differ in terms of their chemical
composition?
-Crust composed of silicates while mantle composed of iron
and magnesium silicates and core is composed of nickel and
iron.
3. What are the four mechanical layers of earth?
- Litosphere, Asthenosphere, Mesosphere and Outer Core.
4. How Litosphere, Asthenosphere, Mesosphere and Outer Core differ from each other?

5. Compare and contrast Compositional layers and Mechanical layers of Earth

Differences Similarities
Compositional Layer Determine by their components These layers are both part of Earth
Geosphere
of Earth
Mechanical Layer of Determine by their properties

ROCKS

IGNEOUS ROCK SEDIMENTARY ROCK METAMORHIC ROCK

1. What are the three types of rocks?
- Igneous Rock, Sedimentary Rock and Metamorphic Rock.
2. How Igneous Rocks formed?
-start as molten material that cools and solidifies.
3. How Sedimentary Rocks formed?
-made up of grains that break off of other rocks through a process called
weathering. Physical weathering breaks off grains of rock, while chemical
weathering breaks rocks down into more basic elemental components.
4. How Metamorphic Rocks formed?
-been heated or squashed or buried (which often means they are both heated and
squashed/pressure), which can cause minerals in the rocks to recrystallize.
5. Compare and contrast Igneous Rocks, Sedimentary Rocks and Metamorpchic
rocks.
The Rock Cycle
1.Study and Explain the concept map
about Rock Cycle in terms of earth
process. Briefly discuss the different
processes of rock cycle.

2. How Rock types related to each other?

Evaluation:
Complete the statement by filling in the correct word/s in the blanks. ¼ sheet of paper.

1. The word "geosphere" comes from the Greek words ____ meaning
earth, and ____meaning ball or sphere.
2. According to National Geographic Society, _______ consists of the
interior and surface of Earth, both of which are made up of ____.
3. ______start as molten material that cools and solidifies.
4. ______ are rocks that have been deformed.
5. ______ are determined by their components, while _____ are
determined by their physical properties.
Answer:

1.Geo – sphaira
2.Geosphere- rocks
3.Igneous rocks
4.Metamorphic rocks
5.Compositional layer- mechanical layer.
Extend

• Did you know that there are other systems of earth aside form
geosphere?
- These are Atmosphere, Hydrosphere and Biosphere.
• Did you know that these Earth’s Subsystems are interconnected with
each other?
- It calls System Interaction
• Did you know that if there’s an earthquake (tectonic and volcanic)
these subsystems are affected?
- All subsystems of earth are affected.
Extend
This activity aims to create a performance related to the interaction of geosphere to other earth’s
system through differentiated activities.

The students (in group) will be given the freedom to choose one of the following
activities as an output.
1. Poster/Slogan
2. Dubsmash
3. Infomercial
4. Roleplaying
The unified theme for the various activity is “Earth’s Systems Interaction” Each output
shall be evaluated based on the following criteria:
Creativity - 10 points
Content - 10 points
Clarity of message - 10 points
Total -30 Points
