SIMPLE SENTENCE

A simple sentence has the most


basic elements that make it a
sentence: a subject, a verb, and a
completed thought.

1. Joe waited for the train.
"Joe" = subject, "waited" = verb

"The train" = subject, "was" = verb
EXAMPLES

3. Mary and Samantha took the bus.


"Mary and Samantha" = compound
subject, "took" = verb

"I" = subject, "looked" = verb
EXAMPLES
5. Mary and Samantha arrived at the bus
station early but waited until noon for the
bus.
"Mary and Samantha" = compound
subject, "arrived" and "waited" =
compound verb

COMPOUND SENTENCE
Compound sentences are formed by combining two
independent clauses.
Note that when independent clauses are joined, they need a
coordinating conjunction between them.
Coordinating conjunctions include the following words:
for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so.
EXAMPLES

-Erin loves her brother, and he loves


her too.
-The dog ran off, but I didn't care.
-I am tall, yet she is short.

COMPLEX SENTENCE
When a dependent clause is joined to an independent clause, it forms a
complex sentence. The dependent clause can come either at the
beginning or the end of the sentence.

Note that when you place the dependent clause at the beginning of the
sentence, you need to put a comma after it. When the dependent clause
is at the end of the sentence, no comma is required.
EXAMPLES
-When I come home, I will eat dinner.
-If you sell the most cookies, you will
win the prize.
-The college gave her a scholarship
because she is so smart.

Read the sentence carefully. Identify each as simple,
compound or complex. Write S for simple, C for
compound and CL for complex.
