1. What is Pearson sample coefficient correlation?

Answer:
It is a test statistic that measures the strength of the
linear relationship between two variables.
REVIEW
2. What is the formula of Pearson sample coefficient
correlation?
Answer:
Pearson r Formula Where:
n = the number of pairs of scores or sample size
Σxy = the sum of the products of paired scores
Σx = the sum of x scores
Σy = the sum of y scores
Σx2 = the sum of squared x scores
Σy2 = the sum of squared y scores
SITUATION:
Mang Jose, the local ice cream shop owner of Brgy. Maligaya I
keeps track of how much ice cream he sells versus the
temperature on that day, here are his figures for the last 4 days:
Ice Cream Sales Temperature OC
Days
(X) (Y)
1 100 20
2 205 25
3 170 23
4 310 31
SITUATION:
Can you help Mang Jose to have a firm decision on
whether to keep or stop selling ice cream to the
neighborhood?
How can you help Mang Jose?
To help Mang Jose, you need to learn first how to
compute Pearson’s sample correlation coefficient r,
and this is our topic for today.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

• create a Pearson correlation coefficient table,

• compute the Pearson’s sample correlation
coefficient r; and
• apply the concept of Pearson sample correlation
coefficient in real-life situation.
Peter Pan and Tinker Bell spent
their never-ending childhood
having an adventure on the
mythical island of Neverland.
They were on their way to the
island when Captain Hook and
his crew came, and took Tinker
Bell. Oh no..
In order to save Tinker Bell from
Captain Hook, Peter Pan must
finish every quest. There are
three quests that need to be
done. In every quest, there is a
corresponding activity.
Quest No. 1

Time Limit:
5 Minutes
Quest No. 1
To finish the first quest, we need to do the activity
entitled "Fill Me Up".
Directions:
The class will be divided into 4 groups. Each group will be
given 2 seconds to guess a single letter in the alphabet. A
bonus round will be unlock after all the group has been given
the chance to guess for that number. Each letter you guess is
equivalent to 1 point.
Remember: You cannot play the bonus round if your
points is not enough if you got the penalty, this is to
avoid a negative scores.
Bonus round:
1. You can guess the word if the guessing is not yet complete. Just say “GRAB”
and your representative will raise his/her hand and wait to be acknowledge
by the moderator and guess the word. 5 points for correct guess but
remember if you guess it wrong 3 points will be deducted from your score.
Note: You only have 2 chances to “Grab” for the entire game.

2. A group can steal the chance to guess the word if the prediction is wrong. Just
say “STEAL” and raise the hand of your representative and wait to be
acknowledge by the moderator and guess the word. 6 points for correct guess
but remember if you guess it wrong 4 points will be deducted from your score.
Note: You only have 2 chances to “Steal” for the entire game.

Example #1.
Teachers of Casandig National High School instilled
among their students the value of time management and
excellence in everything they do. The table below shows
the time in hours spent in studying (X) by six Grade 11
students and their scores in a test (Y). Create a Pearson’s
sample correlation coefficient r table.
X 1 2 3 4 5 6
Y 5 10 10 15 25 30
The formula for Pearson’s r is:

Where:
n = the number of pairs of scores or sample size
Σxy = the sum of the products of paired scores
Σx = the sum of x scores
Σy = the sum of y scores
Σx2 = the sum of squared x scores
Σy2 = the sum of squared y scores
X 1 2 3 4 5 6
Y 5 10 10 15 25 30

Steps to create a Pearson correlation coefficient table.

1. Construct a table as shown below.
X Y XY X2 Y2
1 5
2 10
3 10
4 15
5 25
6 30
Steps to create a Pearson correlation coefficient table.

2. Use basic multiplications to complete the table.

X Y XY X2 Y2
1 5 5 1 25
2 10 20 4 100
3 10 30 9 100
4 15 60 16 225
5 25 125 25 625
6 30 180 36 900
Steps to create a Pearson correlation coefficient table.

3. Add up all the columns from bottom to top.

X Y XY X2 Y2
1 5 5 1 25
2 10 20 4 100
3 10 30 9 100
4 15 60 16 225
5 25 125 25 625
6 30 180 36 900
Quest No. 2

Time Limit:
5 Minutes
Quest No. 2
This activity will be called Coop-ToGDer”.
Direction: Using the table below, the 4 groups (same from
Quest No. 1) will help each other by doing the assigned task
given to them. Do the work for 2 minutes in your seats and 3
minutes on the board.
Example #2
A group of Senior High School students of Maligaya National High
School is conducting a collaborative research and they want to
determine whether there is a correlation between the age of
tricycles (in years) in a certain Barangay and the mileage it runs
(in kilometers). The data are shown below.

Age (X) 1 3 4 5 7
Mileage (Y) 35 20 15 10 15
Assigned Task on the Board:

Group 1 representative will construct a table.

Group 2 representative will use basic multiplications to complete

the table.
Group 3 representative will add up all the columns from bottom to
top.
Group 4 representative will substitute the values obtained from Step
3 in the formula.
Congratulations!

Pearson r value interpretation.
Quest No. 3

Time Limit:
5 Minutes
Quest No. 3
This activity will be called Break the Code: “EsP9PK-
IVa-13.1”.

Directions:
Go back to your respective groups from Quest
number 1. Form a circle and do the following task:
Assigned Task:
Group 1 - Team Talent (Talents are natural skills and
abilities. It may seem like you’re born with them, or at least
you learn them very quickly).

Task:
Arrange the steps on how to construct the Pearson
coefficient correlation table and how to compute the
Pearson r and sing it with any tune you prefer.
Assigned Task:
Group 2 – Team Passion (Being passionate about
relationships can illustrate your desire to maintain
closeness with your loved ones and build stronger, more
meaningful bonds with new people who enter your life.)

Task:
Share your opinions, tips, and special moment of the
discussion of the lesson.
Assigned Task:
Group 3 – Team Ability (Abilities are natural
characteristics that a person possesses without being
taught and the power to do things well).
Task:
Reveal the real message. Using the given sum, substitute each to the
formula of Pearson’s sample correlation coefficient. Then, compute
the value of r. Choose your answer from the WORD BOX below. Write the
letter that corresponds to your answer on the DECODING AREA.
Assigned Task:
Group 4 – Team Values (Values are individual beliefs that
motivate people to act one way or another. They serve as a
guide for human behavior).

Task:
Apply the concept of Pearson correlation coefficient r in
real-life situation.
Rubrics will be use to evaluate the group output
