Handwritten notes
Indicate if the positive particle will
experience work.

a) As it moves up the plate

b) As it moves down the plate

Indicate if the electron will experience

work.

c) As it moves up the plate

d) As it moves down the plate
1) WHAT SORT OF MOTOR? DC as it has brushes

2) WHICH PART OF THE MOTOR ROTATES? 3) WHICH PART DELIVERS ELECTRIC CURRENT TO
THE COMMUTATOR THEN THE ARMATURE.
a) Stator magnets
b) Armature a) Stator magnets
c) Brushes B b) Armature
c) Brushes C
What do you need for MAGNETIC FIELD GENERATION

ELECTRIC CURRENT moves from the terminals to the

ARMATURE WINDINGS this produces an
MAGNETIC FIELD which interacts with the permanent
STATOR MAGNETS

What happens when MAGNETIC FIELDS INTERACT

A FORCE being exerted on the armature, causing it to rotate.

A rotation CHANGES the MAGNETIC FIELD which induces a

VOLTAGE (refer to Faraday’s Law of Electromagnetic induction)

What is the role of the COMMUTATOR AND BRUSHES

BRUSHES delivers electric current to the commutator

COMMUTATOR reverses the direction of the current in the
armature windings ensuring that the rotational motion of the
armature is continuous.
An electron moves at a speed of 2 x 10^-4 m/s within a magnetic field that is 0.5 T in
strength. Calculate the force acting on the electron. The magnetic field is
perpendicular to the electron.

F = qvB Sin Ꝋ

F = (-1.6 x 10^-19 C) * (2 x 10^-4 m/s) * (0.5 T) * 1

F = -1.6 x 10^-19 C * 1 x 10^-4 T*m/s
F = -1.6 x 10^-23 N
Identify one feature that indicates this is

a DC motor.

SPLIT RING

If the brush is broken indicate if the

motor will work?

THE MOTOR WILL NOT WORK

If the stator magnet is absent indicate if a

Changing magnetic field can be generated.

Electromagnetic Induction

An electromotive force (emf) occurs in a conductor when it is exposed to a changing

magnetic field such as in a motor and generator.

According to Lenz law the induced emf and current in a conductor will always be in
a direction that opposes the change in magnetic flux that produced it.

DESCRIBE WHAT HAPPENS TO THE CURRENT ON THE AMMETER

WHEN THE

a) North pole of a magnet approaches a conductor

b) North pole of a magnet moves away from a conductor

Why does the Galvanometer/Ammeter deflect to the RIGHT when the
NORTH POLE of a magnet moves into it and goes to the LEFT when
the NORTH POLE moves out?

As a magnets north pole moves (changing magnetic field) generates a

current and emf.

According to Lenz law the induced emf and current in a conductor

will always be in a direction that opposes the change in magnetic
flux that produced it.
Why is the Galvanometer showing a zero reading when the magnetic is
stationary?

Current and emf is produced only when there is a (changing magnetic

field).
Eddy current - Eddy current brakes
Eddy Currents

Electric braking systems use eddy currents to generate braking force. When a
conductive material, such as a metal disc or rotor, moves through a magnetic field, it
induces eddy currents in the material. These eddy currents create their own magnetic
field, which opposes the original magnetic field and produces a braking force that
slows down the motion of the conductor.

Eddy current braking systems are often used in applications where smooth and
consistent braking is desired, such as in electric trains, roller coasters, and certain
industrial machinery. These systems offer advantages such as reduced wear and
maintenance compared to traditional friction-based braking systems.
1) Eddy Currents are used to generate 3) Eddy Currents create a magnetic field which
