BASIC CALCULUS

EXTREME VALUE
THEOREM
• If a function is continuous on a closed
interval then has both maximum and
minimum value on
• Example.
• Find the absolute extrema:

• 1.

• Steps:
• 1. Find the critical values/ points by getting the first
derivative of the given function and equate to zero.
• 2. Find the y values.
• 3. Substitute the given interval and critical values
to the original equation. The highest value is the
maximum point and the lowest value if the
minimum point
OPTIMIZATION
Examples:

1. Find two positive numbers such that the

sum of the first and twice the second is 100
and their product is a maximum.
Examples:

2. Find the dimensions of a rectangle with a

perimeter of 100 feet and whose area is a
maximum.
Examples:

3. A gardener wants to make a rectangular

enclosure using a wall as one side and 120
meters of fencing for the other three sides.
Express the area in terms of x, and find the
value of x that gives the greatest area.
Examples:

4. A farmer has 4000 feet of fencing and wants

to create a rectangular field along the river. He
needs no fence along the river. What is the
largest area of the rectangular field?
Examples:

5. A farmer with 750 feet of fencing wants to

enclose a rectangular area and then divide it
into four pens. What is the largest total area
of 4 pens?
