Mineral Deposits

Nonmetallic
Metallic
Minerals are naturally occurring inorganic substances
found under varying conditions and in different types of
geological environments. They have a crystalline
structure and come with a definite chemical
composition. Minerals are divided into two types,
namely metallic and non-metallic minerals.
What are metallic minerals?

Metallic minerals, are minerals containing one or more

metals. These usually occur as mineral deposits and are a
great heat and electricity conductor, such as iron, copper,
silver, bauxite, manganese.
 gold
 copper
 iron
Important  cromite(made up of chromium, iron
metallic mineral
deposits and other metals)
 nickel
 cobalt
 platinum
copper and gold producers – Baguio, province
of Benguet and Surigao- Davao

 nickel – Palawan and Surigao

Ore/s – mineral-bearing rocks
 Philippines is listed as the
5th mineral country in the world
 3rd in gold reserves
 4th in copper
 5th in nickel
GOLD

It is important in making

jewelry.
COPPER

 It is used in making electrical

wires.
IRON

 The main material for steel bars

used in buildings and road
construction.
NICKEL

 It is mixed with copper and

other metals to form stainless
cooking wares.
TIN

material for milk cans

and other preserved
food products
Nonmetallic Mineral
Deposits
What are nonmetallic minerals?

Non-metallic mineral reserves consist of quarries of stone and

clay and sand pits; mineral deposits with chemical and fertilizer;
salt deposits; quartz deposits, gypsum, natural gemstones,
asphalt and bitumen.
Clay is a finely-grained natural rock or soil material that combines one or
more clay minerals with traces of metal oxides and organic matter.
Sand is a naturally occurring granular material
composed of finely divided rock and mineral particles.
Limestone, sedimentary rock composed mainly of calcium carbonate (CaCO3),
usually in the form of calcite or aragonite. It may contain considerable amounts of
magnesium carbonate (dolomite)
Marble
is a metamorphic rock consisting of carbonate minerals that have
recrystallized under the influence of heat and pressure.
A hard white or colorless mineral consisting of silicon dioxide, found
widely in igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks. It is often colored
by impurities (as in amethyst, citrine, and cairngorm).
Gravel is a loose aggregation of
rock fragments. Gravel occurs
naturally on Earth as a result of
sedimentary and erosive geological
processes; it is also produced in large
quantities commercially as
crushed stone.
