PHILIPPINE

ENVIRONMENT
Objective:
Describe and demonstrate how
places on Earth may be located
using coordinate system.
Motivation

Where in the world is the

Philippines?
EQUATOR
Partof the world that separates
the North Pole and the South
Pole.
Northern Hemisphere
Partof the world between the
North Pole and the equator.
Southern Hemisphere
Partof the world between the
equator and the South Pole.
Lines of latitude
 are imaginary lines
 are parallel to the equator and to each
other
 form circles that are smaller at the poles
 do not meet with each other
Equator
 starting point for latitude

 at latitude 0 ° (0 degree)
Lines of Latitude
 At the North Pole, the latitude is 90 °
N (90 degrees north).

 At the South Pole, the latitude is 90 °

S ( 90 degrees south).
Lines of Longitude
 are imaginary lines
 are not parallel to each other
 do not form circles
meet at the poles ( extend from pole to
pole )
 have the same length
Prime Meridian
 starting point for longitude

 at longitude 0 ° ( 0 degree )
Longitude 180 °
Represents the boundary of the
eastern hemisphere and western
hemisphere.
Latitude and Longitude of
Manila

14 ° North, 121 ° East
Describe the location of the
Philippines
 Manila is just a “spot” on the globe and it is
easy to locate.
 Philippine is not just a spot but an “area”.
Locating a place like our country is by
drawing a rectangle around it and getting
the latitude and longitude of each corner of
the rectangle.
Evaluation: Identify the city nearest to
the following rounded latitudes and
longitudes.

1. 41 degrees N, 74 degrees W
2. 56 degrees N, 38 degrees E
3. 12 degrees S, 77 degrees W
To the nearest whole degree, estimate the
latitude and longitude of the following cities.
1. Tokyo
2. Melbourne
3. Singapore
