• Main Purpose  Prevent pollution from ships to protect the
environment by ships from operational or accidental causes e.g.:
• Oil pollution
• Sewage and Garbage pollution
• Air pollution – SOx and NOx

• One of two safety and environmental protection tools of IMO

IV (4) regulation
•The regulation focuses on prevention of sewage pollution from ships
• 7 chapters comprising of 18 regulation
• Equipment, certificates, requirements, control e.g.

• The annex entered into force September 27, 2003

• An Example from the MARPOL Annex IV:

• The sewage discharge from the ship is allowed if it has an approved sewage
treatment plant, which can treat the raw sewage and discharge comminuted
and disinfected sewage. With this arrangement, the discharge is allowed at a
distance of more than 3 nautical miles from the nearest land when the ship is
proceeding with a speed of 4 knots and above
