Presented by: Axel Bergman International Space University

Definition
Geoengineering is a deliberate, planetary scale environmental engineering to counter act the effects of global warming.

Why so controversial?..
Historical context: Started with USSR in the mid 1930s Leningrad Institute of Rainmaking Cold war race to control weather Term was first used to describe dumping industrial waste deep in the deep ocean during the mid 1970s

The Incredible Economics

Cost of climate change: $2.5 B/year for US Stern Report: Economies shrink by 26% Injecting reflective particles: $1 B/year
Amounts to pennies per ton of CO2

So what about Satellites?

It all depends on cheap and reliable access to space Currently only 10 times too expensive

Ethics of geoengineering
Would it undermine carbon abatement? Who decides? What are the unintended impacts? How much compensation are we willing to invest? Space solutions are attractive in that they circumvent many of these issues
International Space University Axel Bergman March 2009

Summary
We are starting to understand the problem and the danger..not too late to act. Failure of abatement strategies are forcing us to pull out geoengineering back out of the closet Space Solutions represent an incredible upfront investment but present salient advantages
