Theme is a part of a sentence or discourse that
is the basis or mainTHEME
topic being discussed. Theme
provides direction or focus for speaking or writing.
In a sentence, the theme is usually found at the
beginning of the sentence or at the beginning of the
paragraph.
Themes provide important information about

DEFINITION OF RHEME
Theme:
Usually, the theme is found at the beginning of a sentence
or at the beginning of a paragraph.
Rheme:
Rheme usually follows the theme in sentence
order
EXAMPLES
• The television has done a lot of good things to people in every
aspect to life. (the television: theme; has done a lot of good
things to people in every aspect to life: rheme)
• It helps educate young people. (it: theme; helps educate young
people: rheme)
• This substance is believed to be very effective in killing bacteria
living. (This substance : theme; bacteria living: rheme )
CONCLUSION
Theme and rheme are two important components in the analysis of information
structure in sentences or discourse. Theme is the basis or main topic in a
sentence or discourse, while the rheme provides additional information or
explains the theme. Theme functions as an introduction or introduction to the
topic to be explained, while the rheme develops or expands the theme that has
been introduced. And usually, theme is found at the beginning of a sentence or
beginning of a paragraph, while rheme follows the theme in sentence order.
