USRAH 2
WEEK 3
MUHAMMAD HAFIZ BUKHARI BIN MOHD KHADARI
WHAT WILL WE DISCUSS TODAY?
TAHARAH (WUDU’
AND TAYAMMUM)
WUDU (ABLUTION)

- Before we can perform salah we need to prepare ourselves mentally, physically, and spiritually.

- A large portion of this preparation is what is known as wudu. It is a purification process that every
Muslim must perform before their prayer can be performed.

- It is such an important part of the salah that if anyone decides to leave it due to ignorance,
forgetfulness, or negligence then their prayer will not be accepted by Allah.
- Our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:
“No salah is accepted without wudu (purification)”
Sahih Muslim, Book 2, Hadith 2
WUDU

• The word of God means: "O you who believe, when you want to perform the prayer (even though you have a small Hadas),
then (do ablution) that is, wash your face and your hands covering the elbows and wipe part of your head and wash your feet
covering ankle..." (Surah al-Ma'idah, verse 6)

• Wuduk in Arabic comes from al-wada'ah which means al-hasan which is goodness and an-nazofah (cleanliness).

• From the terms 'goodness' and 'cleanliness' it can be understood that the ritual of ablution carries an important message in our
lives as Muslims who need to always do good and take care of external and internal cleanliness.

• Imam Ahmad, Abu Dawud and Ibnu Majah narrated that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said,
meaning: "There is no prayer for a person who does not perform ablution."
WUDU

• When we understand the importance of ablution in determining the quality of worship, especially prayer, then we need to
review the way we perform ablution.

• Do we perform ablution perfectly, do we comply with the procedures shown by the Prophet SAW and do things that do
not affect the perfection of ablution?

• From Humran that Uthman RA asked to perform ablution, then he washed his palms three times, gargled, put water in
his nose and let it out.

• Then he washed his face three times, washed his right hand up to the elbow three times, washed his left hand up to the
elbow three times. Then he wiped his head, then he washed his right foot up to the ankle three times, as well as the left.

• Then he said: "I have seen the Prophet SAW perform ablution like this ablution." (Hadith narrated by al-Bukhari and
Muslim)

NAWAFIL
NAWAFIL PRAYERS

• Muslims also offer additional Rak‘at of Prayer apart from Fard and Sunnat Rak‘at. These
are called Nawafil Prayers or Nafl.
• These are optional Prayers. Those who voluntarily offer Nawafil Prayers reap the benefits of
Allah’s favours. Nawafil Prayers are as follows:
1. Eight Rak‘at of Tahajjud.
2. Two Rak‘at after the two Rak‘at of Sunnat at the end of Zuhr Prayer.
3. Four Rak‘at before Fard of ‘Asr Prayer.
4. Two Rak‘at after the two Rak‘at of Sunnat in Maghrib Prayer.
1. Four Rak‘at of Ishraq Prayer.
2. Two Rak‘at offered when one enters a mosque.
3. Two Rak‘at offered when seeking blessings from God Almighty.
4. Two Rak‘at offered as Salat-i-Hajjat.
5. Two Rak‘at offered as a Thanksgiving Prayer.
• There are some other Nawafil Prayers which are mentioned later in this book.
• One may offer as many Nawafil Prayers as one wishes. However, Nawafil should not be offered during the forbidden
times for Prayers. For example, they should not be offered between ‘Asr Prayer and Maghrib Prayer. It is preferable to
offer Nawafil Prayers at home rather than in a mosque except for those which have been mentioned to be offered in a
mosque. However, it is a matter of personal choice and there is no compulsion in this matter.
