Promoting Gun Safety with Children

(A guideline for parents and community leaders)

Goals:
• Equip with tools to navigate conversations and reduce injury
• Explore firearm data: victim & shooter demographics, type of gun violence, time &
location of shooting
• Development and implementation of strategies
Risk Factors:
- access to guns
- history of violent behavior
- exposure to violence
- alcohol and drug use
- resident of area with lack of resources, poverty, and high incidence of crime
Have the conversation!
• Incorporate gun safety into the conversation at an early age
• Explore what your child knows about gun safety and the questions they have
• If a firearm is discovered: Stop! Do Not Touch! Tell an adult.
• Do not touch a gun when you assume it is a toy.
• Family safety plan to display commitment to gun safety
