HMI & SCADA
INTRODUCTION TO HMI

 A Human-Machine Interface (HMI) is a user interface or

dashboard that connects a person to a machine, system,
or device. While the term can technically be applied to
any screen that allows a user to interact with a device,
HMI is most commonly used in the context of an industrial
process.
HMI USING IN INDUSTRY

 Manufacturing of pharmaceuticals
 Food processing
 Oil and gas
 Mining operations
 SCADA systems
 Applications of robotics
 Transportation
ADVANTAGES OF HMI

 Real-time feedback, alarms and system modification without

the need for reprogramming
 Functionality for both simple and complex tasks
 Customizable interface to suit specific needs or preferences
 Improved efficiency by allowing operators to easily access
process data and input commands
 Improved safety by presenting alarms and other important
information to the operator
DISADVANTAGES OF HMI

 Dependency on the HMI: If the HMI fails or becomes unavailable, the operator
may not be able to access process data or control the process.
 Potential for Human Error: Operators can make mistakes when interacting
with the HMI, which can lead to errors in the process.
 Expensive to Install and Maintain: HMIs may require special software or
hardware that can be costly to install and maintain.
 Scalability is Limited: The system might be unable to work with new changes
or upgrades.
INTRODUCTION TO SCADA

 A SCADA system is a combination of hardware and

software that enables industrial process
automation by capturing Operational Technology
(OT) real-time data. SCADA connects the sensors
that monitor equipment like motors, pumps, and
valves to an onsite or remote server.
SCADA USING IN INDUSTRY

 Electric power generation, transmission and distribution

 Water, wastewater and sewage
 Buildings, facilities and environments
 Manufacturing
ADVANTAGES OF SCADA

 Scalability
 Real-time monitoring and controlling
 Automation
 Remote access
 Reduce costs and energy
 Safety
 Increased life of the equipment
DISADVANTAGES OF SCADA

 High cost of installation and maintenance

 Susceptibility to cyber attacks and hacking
 Complexity and difficulty of use, requiring specialized training and knowledge
 Impact on unemployment rates, as automation reduces the need for human
workers
