environment? Objecti ves: At the end of the lesson, you are expected to: 1. Cite ways of using Earth’s resources sustainably; 2. Recognize that soil, water, rocks, coal, and other fossil fuels are Earth materials that people use as resources; and 3. Demonstrate activities that help conserve natural resources. RESOURCES IN THE PHILIPPINES Natural resources ★ materials or substances that occur in nature and can be used for economic gain. ★ materials created and gathered from nature that humans use to survive and satisfy their needs. 2 types of natural resources 1. RENEWABLE RESOURCES 2. NONRENEWABLE RESOURCES RENEWABL E ➔ resources that can grow again or can be replaced after it is consumed. RESOURCE ➔ these are organic resources which can be S replenished. 1. Solar power ● Solar power is the technology of obtaining usable energy from the light of the sun. Solar energy has been used in many traditional technologies for centuries and has come into widespread use where other power supplies are absent, such as in remote locations and in space. 2. Wind power ● Wind power is the conversion of wind energyinto more useful forms, usually electricity usingwind turbines.Wind power is used in large scale wind farms fornational electrical grids as well as in small individualturbines for providing electricity to rural residencesor grid-isolated locations. 3. Hydroelectric power ● Hydropower or hydraulic power is the force orenergy of moving water. It may be captured for someuseful purpose.Hydropower was used for irrigation, and operationof various machines, such as watermills, textilemachines, and sawmills. 4. Geothermal Energy ● Geothermal energy is energy obtained by tapping the heat of the earth itself, usually from kilometres deep into the Earth's crust.this energy derives from radioactive decay ofelements like uranium and thorium in the Earth's core. This means that geothermal energy it is not a really arenewable source of energy at all; it just happens tobe a very long-lived source. ● MALITBOG GEOTHERMAL POWERPLANT Nonrenewable resources ➔ resources that cannot be replaced once consumed. ➔ once consumed, cannot be replaced or it takes a long time to be replaced. 1. Fossil fuels ● Fossil fuels or mineral fuels are hydrocarbons found within the top layer of the earth's crust. They range from very volatile materials with low carbon: hydrogenratios like methane, to liquid petroleum to non-volatile materials composed of almost pure carbon, like anthracite coal. Often fossil fuels, such as coal, petroleum, and natural gas are considered non- renewable resources, as they do not naturally re-form at a rate that makes the way we use them sustainable. 1. Mineral Resources ● A mineral is a naturally occurring substance, representable by a chemical formula, that is usually solid and inorganic, and has a crystal structure. Mineral resources are the key material basis for socio-economic development. Statistical results show that more than 95% of energy used by mankind, 80% of industrial raw materials and 70% of raw materials for agricultural production are from mineral resources. Mineral resources are not uniform throughout the Earth. Natural resources play a vital role in our survival so we need to use these resources wisely.
