SIGNIFICANT
FIGURE
Significant figure
• refer to the relevant digits in an integer or a decimal number which has been rounded off to
a certain degree of accuracy
• There are 5 rules to round off a positive number to the given number of significant figures.
RULES EXAMPLES
a) All non - zero digits are significant figures 1126 (4 s.f)
234 (3 s.f)
b) Zeros between non – zero digits are significant 1004 (4 s.f)
figures 700 002 (6 s.f)
c) Zeros after a non – zero digit in a decimal 3.00 (3 s.f)
number is significant figures 100.0 (4 s.f)
Significant figure

d) Zeros before a non – zero digit in a decimal 0.04 (1 s.f)
number are not significant figures 0.0082 (2 s.f)
e) Zeros after a non – zero digit in a whole number 199 = 200 (1 s.f)
are not significant figures, except when stated its 819 = 820 (2 s.f)
degree of accuracy
