Definition of Accounts
Accounts is an Art of “Recording”, “Classifying”, and
“Summarizing” the transaction in a systematic manner.

• Transaction is an event which changes the Financial Position of


organization
• Recording: Entering the transaction in the books of
original entry.
• Classifying : transferring the transaction into
appropriate heads.
• Summarizing : Preparing the financial statement like
Profit/loss A/c, Balance Sheet, Ratio analysis etc.
Methods of Accounting
 There are 2 methods of Accounting

Single Entry System :-Only cash


transaction recorded.
Double Entry System :-Both cash & credit
transaction are recorded.
Classification of Accounts
There are 3 types of Classifications

Personal Accounts:-Personal Accounts are the


Accounts of Persons with whom a business
carries on.

Example:-
1 Natural persons:- Mr. Darshan, Raj etc.,
2 Artificial persons:- Companies & Organizations.
Real Accounts:-Real Accounts are the accounts of
Properties , or the things owned by the business.

Example:- land , building, plant & machinery.

Nominal Accounts:-Nominal Accounts are the


accounts of incomes & gains , Expense and Loss.

Example :- sales, purchase, paid, received etc.,

Important Accounting Terminologies

STOCK:-Unsold goods lying in a business at any given


period is called as stock.

OPENING STOCK:-Unsold goods lying in a business at the


starting of the any given period is called opening stock.

CLOSING STOCK:-Unsold goods lying in a business at the


end of the any given period is called closing stock.
DRAWINGS:-Drawings refers to cash or goods
withdrawn by the proprietor for his personal use from
the business.

DEBTOR:-A Debtor is a person who owes money to the


business.

CREDITOR:-A Creditor is a person to whom business


owes money.
REVENUE:- Revenue refers to the earning of a
business.

EXPENSE:-An expense refers to the expenditure in


return for which some benefit is received.

LOSS:-Loss refers to money or money’s worth given


up without any benefit in return.
JOURNAL:-It is a book of first entry.

LEDGER:-It is a book in which various accounts are


opened.

VOUCHER:-A voucher is a supporting document


for an financial transactions.

SERVICE ORGANISATION

An organization which is involved in the process


of rendering the services to the customer is called
Service Organization.

Ex: Educational Institute, School, Bank , Post office , Charitable


Trust.
Trading Organization

An Organization which is involved in process of


buying and selling of goods are called Trading
Organization.

Ex: Provisional Stores, Departmental Stores, Mall,


Computer Peripheral shops, Stationary shops etc.
Manufacturing Organization

An organization which involves in the


manufacture of products or conversion of raw
materials into finished goods.

Ex: TATA, SUZUKI , MARUTHI ETC.
