LETTER &
RESUME
What is an
Application Letter?
An application letter is one that
seeks a job position. It is a sales
letter in the sense that it sells your
services to your prospective
employer.

APPLICATION LETTER

SOLICITED
This means that you are responding to an advertisement for a
vacant position that needs to be filled. The solicited letter should
indicate in the first paragraph the source and the date of the
advertisement, as well as the vacant position applied for.
APPLICATION LETTER

UNSOLICITED
When the letter is unsolicited, you are only prospecting for a
job. You are only taking chances if your qualifications might fit
the vacancy, should there be one in the company. You need not
cite any source of information regarding the vacant position.

What is a Resume?

Resume or sometimes called

as Curriculum Vitae is the
summary of your personal
information as an applicant.
What is a Resume?
It is the second part of an
application letter

It is a concise picture of what you

have accomplished: education,
work experience, and activities that
will be presented to your
prospective employer (Murphy and
Hidelbrant, 2013).
RESUME
• The information must be presented with headings in
phrases, instead of full sentences

• A one-page resume with an easy to read format will

make it easy to highlight important information.
RESUME

Positive qualifications must be

emphasized, and job related
strengths must be presented.
RESUME
Make your resume realistic and
not “too-good-to-be-true” type of
bragging.

3 Suggested Font Style
and Size

Choose a professional font in a size 11 or 12. Times

New Roman is the classic serif font, while Arial or Calibri
are two of the better choices for sans-serif. Instead of
changing between fonts, try making specific sections
bold or italicized instead.

The font for your header and the introduction to a

section may be a size 14 or 16, but otherwise you
should not use a very large font.
MECHANICS
Your text should always be printed in solid black ink.
IN STYLING Make sure to deactivate any hyperlinks (like to your
email) so that they don’t print in blue or another
YOUR RESUME contrasting color.
4 Order

There is no definite order

in the sequencing of
items but you should
MECHANICS present first what
IN STYLING
the job demands.
