NONRENEWABLE ENERGY PHYSICAL SCIENCE WHAT IS ENERGY SOURCES? Energy resources can be defined as materials or elements that can be used to produce energy. Energy is a quantitative property, which produces an output or a force that can be analysed. This energy can be in the form of electricity, heat, or mechanical energy. Energy sources are renewable or nonrenewable
Renewable and nonrenewable energy sources can be used as primary energy
sources to produce useful energy such as heat, or they can be used to produce secondary energy sources such as electricity and hydrogen. THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF ENERGY SOURCES:
Renewable Energy is energy that comes from a source that won’t
run out. They are natural and self-replenishing, and usually have a low- or zero-carbon footprint. Examples of renewable energy sources include wind power, solar power, bioenergy (organic matter burned as a fuel) and hydroelectric, including tidal energy. Nonrenewable Energy comes from sources that will run out or will not be replenished in our lifetimes—or even in many, many lifetimes. Most nonrenewable energy sources are fossil fuels: coal, petroleum, and natural gas. THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF ENERGY SOURCES: WHAT IS FOSSIL FUEL ENERGY SOURCES? Fossil Fuel Energy Sources, including oil, coal and natural gas, are non- renewable resources that formed when prehistoric plants and animals died and were gradually buried by layers of rock. Fossil Fuels may be burned to provide heat for use directly (such as for cooking or heating), to power engines or to generate electricity. WHAT IS BIOMASS ENERGY SOURCES? Biomass Energy Sources refer to the various organic materials that can be used to produce energy. These sources come from renewable organic matter such as plants, animals, and organic waste. Biomass contains stored chemical energy derived from the sun through photosynthesis. Wood is still the largest biomass energy resource today. BIOGASS Biogas Energy Sources is a combustible gas derived from organic materials through anaerobic digestion or thermochemical conversion in an oxygen- free environment. It is primarily composed of methane (CH4), carbon dioxide (CO2), and small quantities of other gases. Biogas is considered a renewable energy source and can be used for heat, electricity generation, or as a vehicle fuel. WHAT IS GEOTHERMAL ENERGY SOURCES? Geothermal Energy Sources is heat within the earth. The word geothermal comes from the Greek words geo (earth) and therme (heat). Geothermal energy is a renewable energy source because heat is continuously produced inside the earth. People use geothermal heat for bathing, for heating buildings, and for generating electricity. Hydrothermal Energy Sources refers to the electricity or heat energy produced from hydrothermal heat. In a geothermal power plant hydrothermal heat is used to produce steam, which then drives turbines connected to electricity generators. This is an example of converting hydrothermal heat into hydrothermal energy.
