O Disk Technologies
O SCSI

O FCAL
O Brief explanation
SCSI
Small Computer System Interface
O Set of standards for physically connecting and
transferring data between computers and
peripheral devices.

O Computer bus used to move data to and from

computer storage devices such as hard drives
and tape drives.
O There can be any number of hosts and
peripheral devices but there should be at least
one host.

O SCSI protocol defines communication from

host to host, host to a peripheral device,
peripheral device to a peripheral device.

O Most peripheral devices are exclusively

SCSI targets, incapable of acting as
SCSI initiators
SCSI Hard Drives 50-Pin
O Standard desktop computer or server that has a
SCSI controller with a 50pin connector.

SCSI Hard Drives 68-Pin

O Standard desktop computer or server that does
NOT use hot swappable drives.
O Appropriate for majority of office desktops
and home users.
SCSI Hard Drives 80-Pin (
Hot Swappable)
O For servers with hot-pluggable back-planes.
Serial attached SCSI
O An Initiator: a device that originates device-service
and task-management requests

O A Target: a device containing logical units and target

ports that receives device service and
task management requests for processing. Sends
responses for the same requests to initiator devices
O A Service Delivery Subsystem: the part of an
I/O system that transmits information between
an initiator and a target.

O Expanders: part of a service delivery

subsystem and facilitate communication
between SAS devices.
Features(SAS)
O Benefit storage management
O Reduce the risk of storage technology change
O Flexible and scalable.
Solid State Hard Drives
O A solid-state drive (SSD) is a
data storage device that uses solid-state
memory to store persistent data.
O Uses flash memory NAND technology.
O Use microchips which retain data in non-
volatile memory chips and contain no
moving parts.
1.8" Solid State Drives SSD
O Some laptops and consumer devices

2.5" Solid State Drives SS

DO For laptop / mobile applications.
IDE
O Integrated Device Electronics.
O Integrates the logic controller onto the hard
disk itself.
O Corrected poor signal integrity.
O Support drives up to 540 MB has been
replaced by the superior EIDE (Enhanced-
IDE) technology which supports over 50 GB
FCAL
O Fiber Channel Arbitrated loop
O Arbitrated loop can be physically cabled in a
ring fashion or using a hub.
O The physical ring ceases to work if one of the
devices in the chain fails.
O Arbitrated loop communication are through
the NL_port (node loop port) and FL_port
(fabric loop port), collectively referred to as
the L_ports.
O An arbitrated loop with no fabric port (with
only NL_ports) is a private loop.
O An arbitrated loop connected to a fabric
through FL_port, is a public loop.
