(Direct Attached Storage)

Agenda..

What is DAS..?
Basic type of storage system.
Storage that is connected
directly to the server which
enables quick access to the
data.
It may have one or more no of
storage device and directly
connected to the host
( Server , computer etc..)
with a help of a HBA or ports.
Today also we DAS.
Examples for DAS..
HDD, CD-ROM, Tape drive, Removable disk etc… ,
provided connected directly to our host.

In our FBT, The Exam server (//192.168.1.3) is also a

direct attached storage.

These are all some examples for DAS.

DAS Connectivity..
It uses block level access protocols.
HDD like ATA and SATA are used as internal bus.
Where as in case as SCSI
*Parallel (primary for internal bus).
*Serial (External bus)
Buss and Tag
* Primarily for external mainframe
* Precursor to ESCON and FICON.
Internal DAS connectivity:
Storage connection with help of a cable or bus
internally.
External DAS Connectivity:
Storage connection with the help of cable or bus
externally.
A single enclosure DAS
offers some advantages.
Easy manage
connection.
Helps in optimizing
performance.
It is a general purpose
solution for all type of
storage.
Advantages..
Ideal for local data provisioning.
For small environment.
Configuration is simple.
Low expensive.

These are all some advantages of DAS.

Disadvantages..
Host must be directly connected.
Downloading of data is slow because of CPU usage.
Distance limitation.
More no of ports is needed to expand storage.
Shutdown is required for maintenance.

These are some disadvantages of DAS
