Islam and Extremism
Introduction:
o Islam as a Religion:
Islam is one of the major religions in the world with over a billion
followers in the world.
It was founded in 7th century by Prophet Hazrat Mohammad(PBUH).
 Islam is complete submission and obedience to Allah that is why it is
called Islam.
Definition of Extremism:
• Extremism in Islam refers to extreme or radical interpretations of Islamic
beliefs leading to actions or views that deviate from the right
understanding of religion.
• It is basically extreme value of something , when anything crosses its
limit.
• Extremism is when people hold extreme views or beliefs that are often far
from the mainstream or commonly accepted ideas in a society.
Historical Context About Extremism
1. Early Sectarian Division:
In the reign of Hazrat Usman-(R.A.),a Jew of Yemen
arrived into Madinah as a Muslim named Abdullah Bin
Sabah . He created a conflict between Muslims through
which they were divided into two sects.
i. Shia ii. Sunni
Islamophobia:
• Islamopobia means fear of Islam.
• It refers to irrational hatred or fear directed against Islam.
• Islamophobia occurred when certain western leaders equated Islam with
terrorism.
• They called it radical Islam or Islamic terrorism.
Causes of Extremism
• The main flow of extremism against Islam started after 9/11 attack.
After the attack on World Trade Center and Pentagon,America considered
that this happened due to Al-Qaida which was a Muslim organization under
the leadership of Osama bin Laden.As a result they started to call Islam as
Radical Islam.Whichever Muslim country developed his military and started
progressing the western world started calling it a terrorist group.
Effects of Islamic Extremism
• Extremism can have profound and negative effects on individuals ,
communities and societies.
• Extremist ideologies may lead to violent acts and terrorism.
• Extremism can deepen existing social divides , creating tensions between
different groups within a society.
• Extremist activities can strain diplomatic relations between countries and
lead to international conflicts.
Steps To Counter Extremism:
1. In Islamic community, a person should have the understanding of Holy
Quran . He/She has to obey the orders of Allah so that he/she may not
become extremist.
2. Everyone should be equal in the eye of Law. People must be given equal
rights.
3. The minorities must be provided equal rights . There should be no
restriction on religion.
4. The moral sense of the people must be developed.
Conclusion
• Islam is a religion that promotes peace and justice . The enemies of Islam
especially Jews have created extremism amongst us. If the Muslim World
will not become a united single body then they may be wiped out
altogether.
