WHAT IS CHLOROPLAST
Chloroplasts are chlorophyll-containing
organelles in plant cells; they play a vital
role for life on Earth since photosynthesis
takes place in chloroplasts. Chloroplasts
develop from proplastids, as do
chromoplasts, leucoplasts, and other
plastids.
STRUCTURE OF CHLOROPLAST
IMPORTANCE
Chloroplasts produce energy through
photosynthesis and oxygen-release
processes, which sustain plant growth
and crop yield. As such, chloroplasts are
responsible for the biosynthesis of active
compounds such as amino acids,
phytohormones, nucleotides, vitamins,
lipids, and secondary metabolites
FUNCTION OF CHLOROPLAST
Absorption of light energy and conversion of it
into biological energy.
Production of NAPDH2 and evolution of oxygen
through the process of photosys of water.
Production of ATP by photophosphorylation.
WHERE ARE CHLOROPLAST
LOCATED?
Chloroplasts are present in the cells of all
green tissues of plants and algae.
Chloroplasts are also found in
photosynthetic tissues that do not appear
green, such as the brown blades of giant
kelp or the red leaves of certain plants.
SIZE OF CHLOROPLAST

The chloroplasts are present in

large numbers and are discoid
structures approximately 3-4
micrometer in length by 2-3
micrometer in width.
