Forces, Energy & Motion

10INTG
Syllabus Points

▪ Energy conservation in a system can be explained by describing

energy transfers and transformations (ACSSU190)

▪ The motion of objects can be described and predicted using the laws of
physics (ACSSU229)
Forces, Energy and Motion

▪ Force = push, pull, twist or tear resulting from one object interacting
with another
▪ Energy =
▪ Motion =
Types of Forces

▪ 2 main types
▪ Contact = Direct touch
▪ Non-Contact = No direct
touch
How Forces Change Objects

▪ Change shape
▪ Begin to move objects
▪ Speed up objects
▪ Slow down objects
▪ Stop objects
▪ Change direction of a moving object
▪ Keep an object still/balanced
Balanced vs Unbalanced Forces

Balanced forces are forces Balanced forces are

where the effect of one force responsible for unchanging
is cancelled out by another. motion.
Balanced vs Unbalanced Forces

Unbalanced forces are forces It is unbalanced forces that

where the effect of one or more cause 'changing motion'.
forces are greater than others.
Measuring Forces

▪ Can be measured in many ways

▪ Most often measured using a spring balance
▪ Newtons (N) = the units for force
▪ 1N = 100g of mass being pulled down by gravity

▪ Vector = magnitude and direction

e.g. not just 50m, we say 50m North, or 50m up
Net Force

▪ Net Force = sum of all forces acting on an object

Practice Questions

1. Order these forces from biggest to smallest

a) a truck hitting a pole
b) a rocket being launched
c) typing one letter on a computer keyboard
d) kicking a soccer ball
e) pushing a car along the street
2. If Sally can push with 150N and Marilla with 200N in the same
direction, with what force can they push together? What is the net
force if they push in the opposite direction
3. Draw a diagram of two people having a tug of war.
Draw arrows to show the forces they are exerting on the rope
