CHAPTER- 13
EXPONENTIAL FORM:
The exponent of a power indicates how many
times the base multiplies itself.

n factors of x
53 = 5x5x5
If you are Multiplying Powers with the Same Base,
KEEP the BASE SAME and ADD the EXPONENTS!

EX: 5 x 5  5
4 3 7

7 x7  7
3 5 8
When Dividing Powers with the Same Base,
KEEP the BASE & SUBTRACT the EXPONENTS!

EX: 5 ÷ 5  5
7 3 4

5 ÷5  5
3 6 -3
If you are Raising a Power to an Exponent,
you Multiply the Exponents!
If the Product of the Bases is Powered by the same
Exponent, then the Result is a Multiplication of
individual factors of the Product, each powered by
the given Exponent.

EX: 5 x 6  (5×6) = 30 4
4 4 4

4 x 3  (4×3) = 12 2
2 2 2
Quotient Law of Exponents:
If the Quotient of the Bases is powered by the
same Exponent, then the Result is both
Numerator and Denominator , each powered by
the given Exponent.
n
 x 
n x

 y  y n

 EX: 5 7 ÷ 7 7  (5÷7) 7
So, when I take
a Power of a
Quotient, I appl
3 ÷ 5  (3÷5)
2 2 2

the exponent to
Any Base Powered by Zero Exponent
equals to One.
EX:- 5  1
0

12  1
0
If the Base is Powered by the Negative
Exponent, then the Base becomes
Reciprocal with the Positive Exponent.
EXAMPLE OF EXPANSION OF NATURAL NUMBER IN
EXPONENTIAL FORM
4523 = 4 × 1000 + 5 × 100 + 2 × 10 + 3 × 1
= 4 × 103 + 5 × 102 + 2 × 101 + 3 × 100
79612 = 7 × 10000 + 9 × 1000 + 6 × 100 + 1 × 10 + 2 × 1
= 7 × 104 + 9 × 103 + 6 × 102 + 1 × 101 + 2 × 100
EXPRESSING LARGE NUMBERS IN
THE STANDARD FORM-
ANY NUMBER CAN BE EXPRESSED AS A DECIMAL NUMBER
BETWEEN 1.0 AND 10.0 INCLUDING 1.0 MULTIPLIED BY A
POWER OF 10. SUCH A FORM OF NUMBER IS CALLED
ITS STANDARD FORM.

EX- : IF MASS OF EARTH IS 5,976,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 KG

THEN ITS STANDARD FORM IS 5.976 × 1024 KG

IF SPEED OF LIGHT IN VACUUM IS 300,000,000 M/S THEN ITS

STANDARD FORM IS 3 × 108 M/S
