CARBON

MONOXIDE
 Carbon monoxide is an oxide of carbon which contains 1
atom of carbon and 1 atom of oxygen in its molecule. It is a
colorless and highly poisonous gas.
First Preparation of
Carbon Monoxide
Carbon monoxide was first prepared
by French chemist Joseph Marie
Lassone in 1776 by heating zinc oxide
with charcoal.
Occurrence of Carbon Monoxide

 It does not occur in the free state. Coal gas, volcanic fumes,
chimney gases in industries, automobile exhaust gases and
tobacco fumes liberate carbon monoxide gas in traces. Burning of
charcoal with a blue flame is due to burning of this gas.
Formation of Carbon Monoxide

A fuel is a substance which on burning in air, produces heat or any

other form of energy. When large amounts of carbon or carbon
compounds are burnt in poor supply of air, it leads to formation of
carbon monoxide. Thus, carbon monoxide is a product of incomplete
burning of carbon or fuel.
CARBON + OXYGEN  CARBON MONOXIDE
When carbon dioxide is passed over red-hot charcoal, carbon
monoxide is produced.
CARBON DIOXIDE + CHARCOAL  CARBON MONOXIDE
