CHAPTER 10
TESTING OF PAINT

BS 3900 states the required methods of test for paint

This chapter based on National Grid PA9 requirement
1.Test for volatile & Non-volatile
-Not 100% accurate, as it rely on solvent evaporation
2. Flash point determination
-Flash point is determined by the lowest temperature at which the
paint under test in a closed cup gets ignited by an external source
-Closed Abel cup (instrument0pic identification)
- Blue flame at flash point. Yellow flame at fire point( flash point
exceeded, retest)

CHAPTER 10
TESTING OF PAINT
2. Paint Density
- Defined as weight per unit volume
- Density can be calculated by weighing a known volume of material and
using the formula
Density =Weight/Volume
- A density cup with a capacity of 100 cc is used to measure(Picture)
- Other names are
1. Relative density cup
2. Specific gravity cup
3. Weight per litre cup
4. Weight per gallon cup
5. Pyknometer
CHAPTER 10
TESTING OF PAINT

2. Paint Density
- Density cup is made of aluminum
- Capacity 100 cc
- Unit of density is gram/cc
- Density helps to know the volume required to paint an area
- Relative density or Specific gravity is the ratio of density of
material to density of water. Density of water is 1 gm/cc
- Eg; Density of material =1.4 gm/cc
Specific gravity = density of material/density of water
Specific gravity= 1.4 gm/cc/1 gm/cc= 1.4
CHAPTER 10
TESTING OF PAINT

2. Paint Density
- Workout problem
1. If 5 litres of paint weight 7.2kg. What would be the density?
density= weight/volume= 7200/5000= 1.44 gm/cc
specific gravity = 1.44
kg gm= multiply by 1000
litre cc= multiply by 1000
CHAPTER 10

2. Paint Density
- Workout problem
2. A two pack epoxy is mixed at a ratio of five parts base to two parts
activator of given densities of which are pack A 1.25 gm/cc and pack B 0.97
gm/cc. What is the density of mixed paint?

Density of base = 1.25 gm/cc ( weight of unit volume)

Density of activator= .97 gm/cc
Volume of base= 5 cc
Volume of activator= 2 cc
Total volume of paint = 5+ 2= 7cc
Weight of 5 part base= 5x1.25= 6.25 gm
Weight of 2 part activator= 2x.97= 1.94 gm

3. Degree of dispersion
- Degree of dispersion refers to size of pigment
- Hegman Grind gauge
- Other name is fineness of gauge
- Picture

4. Viscosity
- Viscosity is the resistance to flow
- Viscosity affects the manufacturing process, application & leveling
properties
- Value of viscosity changes with temperature. So viscosity
measurements shall be made at fixed temperature. Typically 20ºC.
+/- 0.5ºC
- Two categories of viscometers
Rotational viscometer and Flow Viscometers
- Viscosity is calculated to know whether thinner added in paint is
within recommended limit or not
CHAPTER 10

4. Viscosity-Rotational Viscometer
- Two equipment come under the category of rotational viscometers
- Rotothinner and Krebs Stromer viscometer. For thixotropic paints

ROTOTHINNER KREBS STROMER VISCOMETER

Measures dynamic viscosity Measures kinematic viscosity

Unit is Poise (CGS) Unit is Stoke

SI unit is NS/m2 Stroboscope is used to measure velocity

Water has 1 centipoise viscosity Rotation speed shall be 200 rpm

4. Viscosity-Flow Viscometer
- Flow cups are used. Types are Zahn & Frikmar, Ford , ISO , DIN
- Zahn & Frikmar used to measure viscosity of hot fluids used
- Ford Cup for ambient temp. Widely
Ford Flow Cup

Made up of Aluminum

Capacity 100 cc

Nozzle size 4 mm. stainless steel

Unit is seconds
