TEMPERAMENTS

 The term temperament implies to the mental & emotional climate of an individual .
 The word temperament originated from Latin word ‘temperare’ which means to
temper, restrain, a mixture or balance of contrary qualities; an innate or acquired
disposition.
 Most humans have a mixture of all 4 temperaments but one type is dominant .
 Temperament can change when a particular condition comes up & then it
becomes topmost in priority in prescribing for a case .

 By understanding temperament of a person we can come to
conclusion of person’s aptitude.
TEMPERAMENT & PERSONALITY
 The temperament is the “REAL ME”, given to us at conception and
remaining constant throughout our life ,where as
 Personality is something which can be changed , developed or enhanced.
TEMPERAMENT IN PSYCHOLOGY
Types:

The five temperaments according to the ancient classification

(1) sanguine
(2) melancholic
(3) choleric
(4) phlegmatic
 (5) nervous temperament
SANGUINE

The sanguine temperament , the one with the kind word & easy smile. He is rightly called as
people’s person. Of the four personality sanguine is the most positive.
 Extremely happy by nature & openly emotional.
 Wants to capture every possible enjoyment in life.
 Express emotions / sympathy fully.
 Is a good communicator
 Can snap back from failure& setback quickly . Set backs do not embrass as that intentions
are good & accept them as due to circumstances. Quickly gets engorresed into another
project .
 CHOLERIC

 Choleric person are dynamic, self- motivated leader ,who can set sights on a target
& relentlessly pursue it until success is achieved .He is a strong willed individual
who makes decisions quickly and decisively, and who readily & easily grasps
difficult concepts and strategies.
 Can work rapidly.
 When not working , you will find them doing something constructive involving
physical exertion ( exercise , gym, sports)
 Their greatest enjoyment in life comes from opportunities & success
 Due to their independent & self sufficient nature they cannot have close
friendship as they expert their friend to have a very high standard of life &
thinking.
 There is no place for lazy &
careless people in their life.
 They feel they are too busy to
acknowledge the presence of others.

 MELANCHOLIC

 Melancholic is often referred to as the black or dark temperament. The most

gifted, emotional and sensitive person with the deepest depression all wrapped
into one package is the melancholic.
 Some what sad ,deeply emotional.
 Rarely free from concern flame there is always the external worry “
what if?
 Posses deep emotions & ability to think deeply but decision making
is poorly developed.
 Hesitate to give advice.
 Allows anger to build up ,bears a grudge .
They criticize themselves often finding
faults.
 Set backs & failures discourage them
 In crisis ,they are too reserved to
express their feelings. Publicly ,but
they tell several people privately.
 They are afraid to hurt
people or make the situation worse.
PHLEGMATIC

 This temperament goes through life doing as little as

possible, quietly and expending little energy. They are
friendly, patient, contented and peaceful people rightly
known a” couch potatoes”.
 Slow ,calm ,steady ,unemotional.
 Rarely gets excited about anything ,unless
their family is threatened.
 Excellent in handling calculations , whether in
school ,work or a profession such as accounting.
NERVOUS TEMPERAMENT

 The nervous temperament is generally worried about day to

day issues and treats every problem like a matter of life and
death.
